Preamp Deal of the Century

If anyone is looking for a true "World Class" preamp at a very fair price..heed my advice. I just recieved a Supratek Syrah preamp that was hand built by Mick Maloney in Western Australia, and it is absolutely beautiful! This preamp is the best deal you will ever find. I would put it up against any preamp out there for both looks and sound. Price? $2500 for the Syrah (includes Killer Phono stage). Not into phono? Try the Chardonney line stage for $2100. Don't get me wrong, I am not associated with this company. I am just a very happy owner! This preamp is VERY dynamic, yet liquid. It conveys the sound of music better than any other preamp that I have ever heard! You can check out the Supratek website at www. cantech.net.au

What are the differences between the Chardonay and the Sauvigon other than price? Is the up-grade noticeble? I just ordered a Sauvignon. How long have orders been taking recently. Thanks.
Hi Bwhite, I just ordered a Cabernet from Mick, on reputation only. Have you seen or heard one? I have not been able to get much information anywhere on the Cabernet and would love for someone to tell me I made a great choice!
Thanks! I am new to tube rolling and on his web site, Mick discourages it. How much improvement over the stock tubes could I expect?
Anyone out there recieve their package recently? I ordered a Cabernet last week, but cannot get Mick to commit to a time frame. How long as he been taking to deliver? Also, when can I expect to hear from him concerning any custom mods I would request? Just very curious and anxious for any info I can get. I am up to date on this thread and it is the reason I bought a Cabernet. Thanks everyone for making this feel like a special club!
Thanks Mustang. You are right, he does answer e-mails, and I sent him one this afternoon.
I ordered a Cabernet first week in January. I guess I'm looking at late spring or summer!
Due to all the great discussion's here, I ordered a Cabernet from Mick last month. I hope by the time summer is here, I'll be in Audio Nirvana breaking in one of Mick's masterpieces. Thanks all and I'll keep the thread up to date with my experience!
Cabernet users, I am expecting my pre-amp anywhere from now until the summer!, but I'd love to hear some feedback. Stock tubes, rolled tubes, how long a break in period. I am matching with a solid state mac 352 and driving B&W 802's. Balanced output? Mick seems to lean towards unbalanced. My speaker cables are 2 meter Granite audio 10awg copper, while my interconnects are the 577 silver. Playback is a Sony sa-xxxes sacd player. I'm dying for info as I wait. Thanks supratek users.
Waiting for a Cabernet, but Mick says he's "behind, waiting for parts" Ordered in January, hopeful for a summer delivery.
I ordered a Cabernet the first week in January, and haven't heard much from Mick outside of the first rounds of e-mails. I'm hoping for a June delivery, but don't realy know. Anyone have a good idea of the current timeline?
Nice to see some traffic here. I am in my fifth month, happily waiting on a Cabernet. I love reading and researching while I wait, all the details to follow.
Interesting. When did you order your preamp? I placed an order for a Cabernet in January, but have asked for some "mods". I exchanged e-mails with Mick late last week, but still no mention of a delivery time frame. Can you let me know when you ordered so I have a reference? Thanks.
Mick is outfitting my cabernet with these tubes. He is sending along the stock tubes, but on his recommendation, I asked him to build with these tubes. It's been along wait, 8 1/2 months, but hopefully soon I'll get the word!
Any out there in Audigon land waiting for their Supratek? I ordered a Cabernet in January '04 from Mick, albeit with some custom tubes, but am stilling waiting for word of delivery. Has anyone been waiting 10 month's or more?
No e-mails, and the web site is gone. Does anyone know if Supratek is on hiatus? or worse? What a shame. I hope it's just a much deserved holiday for an overworked audio genius.
My order for a Cabernet has become a 101/2 month wait. I am torn at this point to take Micks offer of refunding my deposit, (70%, dumb on my part) and look elswhere, or should I stick it out, although on principal, I am upset with the lack of info coming from Australia along with my dissapointment with endless delays, I ultimatley want to get the best preamp for my system. Other alternatives at this point are a Mac 2200 and a VAC sig MKI. What would the loyal following of the Supratek sound, which influnenced my decision to order a Supratek, do in my case?
Well after an 11 month wait, DHL confirms that my Cabernet will be delivered tomorrow. I am, of course very excited, but was wondering what users think of breaking in with the supplied tubes or up grading right away to EML 45 mesh tubes. Any thoughts on what to expect in the first few months of breaking in would be greatly appreceiated.
Thank you Ecclectique, I thought with over 2000 hits, I'd have a few more people wanting to share their experience. I decided on a Supratek only after being hooked on this thread. But, alas, I will be at home enjoying a Cabernet, so what could be so bad!
I have my new Cabernet home and running, Stunning box, rigged with the large 300b mesh plate tubes, sounds great now, and I now it will only get sweeter. Fantastic imaging and liquid mid's with spatial detail that is great. One, thing, the unit is quite microphonic. Anyone have that problem and know what may cause this? What is a solution?

Thanks
Mick posted in this thread on December 31 that:

Big things coming up for Supratek this year. It will no longer be a one man operation- Kevin Covi and an European audiophile invester are coming in as partners . Supratek will have considerable financial clout to enable it to increase production and improve service.

I am not trying to spread false rumors. One can reasonbly assume, that as production increases, and the wait time decreases, he cannot personlly build all the units by himself. If the consensus believes my post to be mis-leading, I will revise it. It is not my intention to spread false rumors, just to market my Cabernet.
FPV, do you actually believe that one classified ad, which I do believe as a private customer, having been mislead for 9 months, I have the right to assume what I do, on Audiogon for a private sale is going to "derail" business for this company? Do you think that is worse than the 2-3 month waiting time that is stated on his website, when it actually takes closer to 11 months, or more, might be a liitle more damaging? Do you think the 2000 plus posts of "free advertising" which drove me to spend $5,000, is not enough to persuade buyers, and that my ad is still going to "derail" his business? You give me far to much credit. Relax people. I've modified the ad before reading these posts.
Indigrose and FPV, let me tell you although it was quite a long wait, the preamp is spectacular, in fit, finish and sonics. I have owned, Conrad Johnson, Mcintosh, Lamm and others, and it is the best sounding preamp I have owned, and I recomend it highly. It one of the pieces of gear that has that "missing piece" quality to your set-up and you gaze at it, while listening to favorite recording and just think "wow". That is technical jargon, for this preamp is special. I am putting it up for sale, for other reasons, not audio related.
I would like to take a moment to apologize and clear any misconceptions I caused earlier this month with a classified ad I posted here on Audiogon. In it, in an amateur attempt at marketing, I surmised that with Supratek taking on investors and growing as a company, that Mick Maloney may not be solely responsible for the products that are built in the future. This is not the case, and I humbly apologize for any "angst" I may have caused.

Plus, I would like to make an unsolicited testimonial, after a month of break-in, my Cabernet has transformed into an unbelievable sounding preamp. I now know what all have been saying for years, these preamps are magic. I have removed my classified, and plan on enjoying this piece for a long, long time.

After having owned, McIntosh, Conrad Johnson, Lamm reference and more, (all wonderful sounding gear) I can say that the Cabernet is clearly the finest sounding line stage I have ever heard.

Hello JT, congratulations on your new Cabernet. I just got my Cab this past December. Trust me, as happy as you are now with the fabulous fit, finish and sound, you won't believe what will happen in a couple or weeks or so. You will be enjoying your music and then the unit warms up and breaks in and you will be taken to audio heaven. It is that dramatic! I have been through a wonderful evolution of great gear, old Mcintosh, new Mcintosh, Conrad Johnson, Lamm and others, but this is the best "ride" I have ever owned! I was a "newbie" at tube rolling, a little intimidated but I am now getting into that and the doors keep opening up. So enjoy and keep this thread going. It is the grand thread on the site. If you like, I will share my novice experience at the tubes I am slowly, and this I recommend, getting into, and I am sure this will inspire more thoughts and opinions.
