Posting the wrong MSRP: why?

Why do people post an inflated MSRP for their used gear?

I mean, it's not hard to check what the real price is.

It makes a very poor impression vis a vis, you know, truthiness.

@fredapplegate

People do it with everything they sell, so why not audio gear?

I've noticed myself that there is a wide range of retail prices for items, depending on where you look.

Amazon is famous for having notoriously high pricing for the same item you can buy for less elsewhere, but what they are really selling is the convenience and the ability to one stop shop.
