Phono Preamp - LoFi to MidFi. So many options!

I’ve been slowly building back my vinyl collection over the past several years and building my system as well. Like many of you, I am in search of something more; in this case more airiness, warmth and soundstage. I feel like upgrading my entry level phono preamp to a MidFi level product in an effort to get this.

Here is my setup:

  • Mofi StudioDeck TT
  • Sumiko Blue Point No. 3 Lo cartridge
  • Schiit Mani 2 phono preamp
  • Peachtree Nova 300 Amp
  • Von Scweikert VR33 speakers
  • Klipsch 12" reference sub

It’s the best sound I’ve ever had, but after a few years, I am desiring the above stated fullness, warmth and airiness, especially in the mid ranges.

The forums here are full of people’s opinions and reviews, and from this I’ve done further research. I’ve narrowed down to a few, but need a little nudge to take the next step. Here is what’s on my (not definitive) short-list:

  • Schiit Skoll - I like the Mani-2 but by all reports, the Skoll is "bigger and better". The left channel hum has me a bit worried. Otherwise I probably would have just bought one.
  • Hagerman Audio Bugle MC - great reviews, especially the service. Very interested, but at this price point is is a lateral move?
  • Darlington Labs MP7B - Not a ton out there on this (just the MP7, before the B). It looks like what I want, but hoping to hear more.
  • Softone Model 4 - I like the hybrid tube set up and have not seen a negative review

For some reason I’d like to find a tube pre-amp, but I hear mixed opinions. Especially with the LO MC cartridge I’m running.

Any thoughts? Did I omit any obvious choices? You can see I’m in the $500 +/- $200 range, but could stretch if there was a silver bullet.

Thanks,

CK
