Perfect music for... a while?

I have a Chesky CD that is about 12 years old and the aluminum layer has started to break down. It has has two gaps in the layer, one about 3 inches long and the other about 2 inches. Both gaps are arcs (about 1/64 inch wide) are roughly concentric and about a half inch in from the outer diamerter. They can easily be seen from both sides of the disc, and ovisouly transmit light. Surprisingly, the disc still tracks.

I emailed Chesky months ago and never got a response. Has anybody else heard of such a thing? Could this be the beginning of a very bad trend, or does it sound like an isolated problem?
