Pass Labs XA60.5

I have pinned over the question of whether a Pass Labs XA60.5 can drive a Magnepan 1.7s? Are using the combination for more than a year now, I can say that the XA60.5 drive them to more than reasonable volume levels.

The question for user is whether you can get pass (pardon the pun) the meters moving. Occasionally, for me at least, they will jump around during classic rock crescendos. This doesn't occur with other types of music. I've been tempted to simply cut out some cardboard and over them up because I have never been able to audibly determine a difference in sound quality.

The Pass Labs XA-Magnepan combination deliver a mid-bass that can simply melt your heart. For instance, the bass guitar on the Flying Burritos' Hot Burrito #1 or Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo are as emotive as recorded music gets. Bass guitar and bass drum are easily distinguished; 'though, to be honest, the bass drum's tone is always better than its body. (Before making mea culpas, however, fault may rest on the magnepans, room, etc.) I imagine that the bigger boy X and XA models may improve body and slam.

I'm in the process of moving to Magnepan 3.7i and DWMs so the test continues.

Prior to using the XA60.5s, I have a bit of a muscle McCormack DNA 225 driving the magnepans and I don't feel that I gave up much in the way of slam.

I use the XA60.5's to power my Magnepan 3.6's in a medium sized room (28X16 ft).

They can play very loud (IMO) with the meters moving very briefly to 1:00 o'clock on a few, very dynamic peaks.

Per a phone discussion with Pass labs (Kent English), they say they hear no sonic loss when the meters bounce very briefly to 1 o'clock. Try covering the meters. You will not hear any sonic loss.

I listen mostly in the dark, and cover the meters with a thin card board. Otherwise the meters look like two blue headlights. I know the volume setting that makes the meters bounce too much. At that level the speakers are seeing peak power over 230 w/pc into 4 ohms.

You should be OK IMO, unless you are a heavy metal head. Why pay for power you do not use? I would not move to the XA100.5 or XA160.5. Too much $$$ IMO.
The smaller amps are also sweeter and warmer sounding.
