Ortofon SPU-GT

I think I’m needing to use an Ortofon SPU-GT (with built in transformer) to set up a turntable to use with an old McIntosh tube pre amp and amplifier.

My question is that I see some are sold with a plastic bottom cover and some without. Were they available both ways? Why without if the extra weight can be compensated for by adjustments on the tone arm?
