I looked at my Bryston 14BSST specs and it has a damping of 300. Now it has 600 watts but wondering if im getting optimum results driving the Walsh 5000's. Mapman, what difference exactly did you notice going up to an amp with a damping of 1000? |
I've had my 5000s 4 months now and they sound better than ever. It does take a long time to break them in! Driving them with 600 watt bryston and they are very dynamic with that. I have slabs of granite anchored with tip toes and use transparent cables. I'm very pleased with the sound. Vocals are very lifelike and bass is full but not boomy. Not at all harsh either. I have just got through reading these 1800 or so posts and I'm convinced more than ever I made the right choice! I had traded in my ohm I's that I had for 30 years for the 5000's. the I's are a great speaker too. Bought some PSB stratus golds about 7 years ago and I sold them and kept the I's John S told me the I's were the best coventional rock speaker they had made |
Living with my OHM 5000's for 9 months Im continually amazed by them. Last month me and my girfriend put up 4 sound blankets, 4 48X24 sound panels. Closed off 2 entries to rooms with doors. Moved a piano, wood table and glass vases and lamps out. After doing this the sound smoothed out on some edgier recordings. But recordings that were well engineered to begin with sounded somewhat better. I had a bright room to begin with. 2 giant windows behind me. Me and my girlfriend look forward to each and every listening session. The 5000's through a huge soundstage and take control of the room with live listening levels. I had OHM I's conventional speakers for years and could not get used to a regular box speaker. The I's had 3 drivers on top and thru a large sound stage. Tried the much touted PSBs stratus golds but sold them and kept I's. Last year traded I's in for 5000's and couldnt be happier. They take a lot of power to sound best. 350 watt Bryston 4BSST was not quite enough power for my tastes. Got a Bryston 600 watt 14BSST and they really opened up dynamically. If the start of a song is really loud it can startle me even though I know its coming! The start of "Hey You" by BTU (record) or "Big Money" by Rush (CD) for examples. They are very quick. And like mapman says they show drum attacks really well that come after a softer passage. Example "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" by Elton John (record). My girlfriend likes the looks of them too. |
I also think a out how much these would cost retail if I had purchased them at a hi end audio salon????? TOTL 5000's listed on Ohms website for $6500 last year. I'm guessing twice that if I couldn't buy direct!! What do you think? I also used transparent audio speaker cables with the metal box. I've tried kimber 8tc and they sounded thin. I even put them in cable cooker for 3 days. The bryston and transparent have good synergy. Mike |
Another example where the 5000's strut there stuff is on Jack and Diane by J Melloncamp. The middle part with drum solo just jumps out at you and can be very dramatic. |
I was using new balanced interconnects and that made volume louder and punchier. I did not have to turn volume control as high to get prior volume levels |
I just got through making a cradle around my OHM 5000's. Let me explain. I have them sitting on 15" X 15" granite slabs and 4 tip toes underneath. Even with the wheels locked they were a hazard of falling off. I have better bass response under the granite. I took a 1 X 6, stained them same shade as speakers and used L brackets to connect. Looks pretty cool. I will post pic later on my page. Has anyone placed granite underneath their OHMs and could they tell a difference? |
I just blew the tweeters on one of my 5000 speakers. Is there a fuse to replace? or do they have to go back to factory. |
Right channel clipped on amp (600 watt Bryston) and high frequencies died on same speaker. I did not turn up volume anymore than usual. I never run in clipping. I always turn volume back. I sent John S an email |
Emailed John S and he said they are under warranty and I am sending both drivers (not cabinets) back for repair and matching. Just 4 screws to loosen then pick up. |
I got my 5000's back a couple of weeks ago and they sound bettter than ever. Tweeter fixed and more protection. Bass is tighter also. Also toe'd them out a bit and treble more audible. Also upgraded to Bryston BP25 preamp to drive my Bryston 14BSST. A great speaker company. I look forward to each and every listening session. |
Finally got a picture posted on my members page with speaker on granite underspikes with cradle around so speaker wont roll off |
What do these OHM Walsh speakers look like with the black mesh can removed? Does anyone have a link? |
I have a PS Audio P1000 with 600 watt Bryston plugged in. I use good power cords and dedicated mains. I don't have the bottleneck problem. Cleans up and tightens bass, darker background. Its running in regenerated port with 60 hz 117 volt. What was your model PS Audio |
I can tell a little difference listening again. My volume knob does not have to be turned as far. 1:30 vs 3:00. I suspect my 15 amp dedicated line may be the actual choke point. A 20 amp line may be the thing however Bryston said my model is the 15 amp version. |
I use Transparent super wave plus. I've tried kimber 8tc and Tara labs . The transparent has the best synergy. Full bodied and holographic. More of an upgrade than my adcom to bryston preamp. More of an upgrade than a Benz s to an ortophon Cadenza bronze. Some say they stay away from cables with any black boxes but these are the best I've had. |
Learned something the other day. I have a pair of OHM 5000's driven by a 600 watt Bryston. Sometimes I noticed my amp would clip at mid volumes. I retightened my speaker connections and placed the spades farther apart by placing one end of spade directly thought binding post hole. My amp never clips at mid volumes now. I no I blew a fuse out on my amp a while ago when speaker coonetions got too close. The OHMs need a lot of current and watts to sound their best. John from OHM recommends using bare wire with no termination. I could see that making the most secure connection. Has anyone else had experiences with loose connections? Maybe I helped someone make their speakers sound better. Mike

I have a question about Walsh speakers and acoustic treatments. I have a 5000 and have 2 panels right behind them and on ceiling 5 feet out from them. Are Walshes better with no acoustic treatments behind them? My room is 20x12 with 8 foot ceiling. I have them on the long wall Thanks for any help. I have researched Internet and not found any answer . Thanks. Mike |
Just to confirm others opinions on OHM 5000 speaker placement, I have realized the proper placement in my room. It is 20X12X8. It has drywall and carpet. I have 3 corner bass traps and 4 acoustic panels. 2 behind the speakers and 2 above. The 3 bass traps sit on 2 apple crates a piece full of records. I have acoustic blankets in front of my windows behind my listening position and also across the hinged double doors. My twin Billy Bags audio rack sits between my speakers on one of the long walls. My speaker controls are set for small room, corner, medium perspective and plus treble. If I place the speakers closer to be walls the bass becomes boomy. I have tried the speakers on the short wall firing down the long part of the room. The bass is solid but the stereo imaging suffers and the two speakers sounding somewhat mono. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve read somewhere that the bigger OHMs need to be 9-12 feet apart to sound their best. This goes against the golden cube speaker positioning formula. Anyway I hope this helps with anyone who is new to OHM speakers and has a rectangular room. I could remove my rack from between the speakers but it would be a big move with me moving 1200 records out of the dedicated music room. if I removed my stereo rack would I get enough improvement to maybe make it worthwhile? The speakers sit out about 8 inches beyond it. Any thoughts or opinions welcome. |
Oh the speakers are 2 1/2 feet out from the long wall 9 feet apart. |
I just ordered 5 ads on the OHM speaker line from tbe 70s and 80s. Ohm F. 5 and others.i will blow them up or frame all 5 togather. Does anyone have an OHM I ad?? |
