Not really that obscure, but I'm a real fan of the Tin Hat Trio. A difficult-to-define sound that's at times reminiscent of 3 Mustaphas 3, Rain Dogs era Tom Waits, John Zorn's Masada, Beirut and/or Madredeus.
Off the beaten track music you love
I'm looking for music that is varied, interesting and well recorded but a little on the obscure side. Kamikaze Ground Crew's The Scenic Route is my favorite example. No one I've played it for in over 20 years, including in shops around the country has heard of it, or them for that matter. Maybe that's a reflection of the company I keep and places I end up in. My taste is all over the map, heavy on female voice, blues-love that guitar, Danny Gatton's 88 Elmira St. is another, although the Elektra recording is only fair, classical, jazz-bebop in particular, tex-mex, sucker for a good pop tune with a hook. The Scenic Route remains in middle rotation. Yours?
