Avalon Acoustics Eidolon serial# 8184/5:
15’x 25’ Wood floored room.
80" Tweeter to tweeter.
91 1/2" Tweeter to front wall.
50" Tweeter to side walls.
1/4" Toe in
86" Approximately, tweeter to listening position.
A slightly modified Golden thirds method.
Two Velodyne 12" DD Plus subwoofers. Located near the strongest room modes, asymmetrically positioned near opposing side walls.
I first heard the, unaffordable to me, Avalon Acoustics Eidolon at dB Audio in Berkeley CA. followed by a few audio shows.
At that time and because of my lack of comparative listening experience I really didn’t know what I was hearing so the Avalon’s presentation seemed somewhat sleepy.
As the years past my own listening sessions grew shorter and I realized my system was horribly fatiguing. I began substituting linear and switching solid state electronics driving my well reviewed affordable speakers with little if any success.
More than twelve years ago enter a pair of one owner Eidolon’s.
Initially positioned in the familiarity of home the time, phase, and driver coherent point source Eidolon’s were surprisingly anything but sleepy.
Within the first five minutes my family was so taken by their improvement their incredible yet somewhat pricey asking price was never questioned.
The performance of my cast aside collection of electronics were dramatically laid bare in the light of the ruthlessly revealing Eidolon’s.
I’ve since settled on (KT 120) Bob Carver Tube mono’s with a loom of Cardas Golden Reference off the 4 ohm taps.
The Optimization parameters on the Velodyne Plus’ #4 preset are dramatically reduced for most LP and reel to reel playback. Not because of rumble but simply because the Avalon’s cover it in my room.
I can’t explain why but with the exception of only a few other speakers I’ve listened to briefly, Thiel, Vandersteen and Rockport’s seem to provide a familiar musicality as the Avalon’s.
All the best in your journey.
