New Hobby Ultrasonic Record Cleaning

Purchased a cheap $199.00 stainless steel digital ultrasonic cleaner with a very nice record cleaning attachment off Amazon and I am having a blast.

This thing is heated, has a timer and an electric motor to rotate the records in the US tank. It is a 6L unit and it is made in China. Seems well built and it cleans records like a much more expensive machine.

I have cleaned a half dozen albums that are 40 plus years old and have only been cleaned with vacuuming machines and this thing is great. The albums I have cleaned sound darn near new and my wife thought I bought another new cartridge or phono pre-amp.

Can not recommend this type of cleaning system enough.

Rediscover those old albums.. if this thing lasts a couple of years I will be a happy dude.

Skypunk, thanks for the link and review of the ultrasonic cleaner you found. I had just added building an ultrasonic record cleaner to my do list for 2021. Instead, I went ahead a minute ago and purchased the one you provided a link to. Great price and a whole lot less work than building one. I didn’t really want to go out and search for all the parts to make one during this pandemic, but really did want one.

I’ll do a search for some Triton X100 next. Anybody else have a surfacant they use and might recommend? Thanks again.

Mike
Slaw, were you meaning in your post at the beginning of this thread, that your Chinese made ultrasonic record cleaner lasted two years and went kaput or the tank sprang a leak, or that it’s lasted two years and is still going strong? Having just ordered one, I’m hoping you meant the latter. I usually avoid Chinese products like the plague due to the endemic quality control issues in manufacturing there, and subsequently having to fix their products after purchase, but I couldn’t resist this one.

Mike
Willy-T, are you using Versa-Clean along with a surfacant or alone. I’m getting confused as to whether one or both type products are needed or advisable to be used. Anyone?

Mike
Antinn, Amazon carries the Tergitol 15-S-9 surfactant, but it’s $160.00 for 500 ml. It sounds like a better product from what you said, but that’s a bit pricey, for me anyway. I guess I’ll go for the Triton X100 instead at $20.00 for the same amount. It would have been nice to have the detergent factor the Tergitol product provides, but unfortunately one has to live within their means. Thanks for the recommend anyway.

Mike
Antinn, thanks for the follow-up on the pint of the Tergitol surfacant for $21.75 from Talas. That's a much more reasonable cost.

Ditto garyalex. Fedex just dropped mine off. I need to go inventory the parts now as a few of the Amazon reviewers complained about missing parts. It really looks nice and well made at first glance. Again thanks Skypunk for bringing this ultrasonic device to our attention. Can’t wait for the surfactant to be delivered to get started.

Unfortunately, here’s a buyers beware on the Happybuy Ultrasonic Cleaner, There were a number of complaints on Amazon about missing parts and the difficulty of obtaining any of those parts from the seller. In my case the basket that goes with the cleaner was missing. I think the unit can still be used solely for cleaning records, but not anything else without the basket, per the instructions.

The seller has offered monetary compensation for the basket (first $25, now $50), but who knows where you could find a replacement basket that would fit. I’m going through Amazon and I’ll report back if this gets resolved, and they come up with the part from the manufacturer as suggested. I don’t know what parts other customers may not have received with their Happybuys that possibly might be needed for record cleaning.

This is the first chance I’ve taken on a Chinese product in a long time so live and learn. Sorry it took so long to report this, but I've had to replace both my email service and computer this past week or so.

Skypunk, that's generous of you and I'll take you up on that your kind offer. I'll figure out how to send you a PM (private message) through this site and we can figure out how you'd like the $25.00 sent. Thanks again. The seller had contacted me a third time today and offered no help finding that basket again.
