My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Yes great stuff here thanks.

I have been moving up the PS Audio food chain.  In the fall I purchased the Stellar Gain stack, with the Stellar Gain Pre Amp / DAC and a pair of the M700 mono class D amps.  This was for my new basement system with my KEF Reference 205's (very revealing speakers with the hyper tweeters)and a M&K sub.  This was to be my 'second' system' and I started by wanting a nice integrated, but changed to the Stellar Gain Stack.  Well it sounded good; but to compare, my upstairs is  Classe SSP-800, Classe CA2300 amp, B&W N802's and a pair of Paradigm Sub 15's.
So the Stellar Gain stack sounded good (fed by the digital outs of a Bluesound Node 2 streaming Tidal / Roon), but not a like upstairs (high standard).  So I talked to PS and decided to upgrade to the Direct Stream Junior DAC, and got into the whole do I need a preamp or not question.  They encouraged me to keep the Stellar Pre, and use the new DSJ for DAC.
Things sounded better but not.... so I then ordered the BHK preamp tp replace the Stellar Gain (still using the M700 amps).
WOW WOW WOW. the BHK totally opened things up, smoothed things out and took away my listening fatigue,  Love the BHK pre.
So now I am getting to my amp questions.  I am considering the BHK 250 stereo amp, as I again have the wonderful opportunity through PSAudio to upgrade.  But since I own a killer stereo amp (Classe 2300) I lugged it downstairs (about 100lbs) and have been comparing the Classe with the nice light M700 mono digital amps.  I was hoping to not hear a significant difference, but I do.  The Classe is just way better.
So now I want to upgrade to the BHK 250 stereo amp (can't do the BHK 300 mono amps do t space and $).

Has anyone made this comparison between the PS Audio BHK 250 stereo amp and the Classe CA2300?  What differences will I see with the tube front end of the BHK? Most BHK amp reviews focus on the 300 mono blocks...Will the 250 still be amazing?  Thanks!
BTW, I had trouble hearing/deciding/liking any playing through my computer. So I Apple TV’d into my stereo, and all of a sudden things became much more definitive.  At first it was just high frequency extension, Bass, voice quality;  Into the stereo I could differentiate soundstage and depth.  Having said all that I hope someone agrees, and since I am an Audience fan (I have AU 24 SX power cords, XLR’s and speaker cables) I hope the Front Row is one I chose!!!
Ken
Well there's the rub; Clear, revealing, dynamic vs sweet.  My Mola Mola suite is clear and resolving; with the right music (I only stream) it is amazing.    With the wrong music it can be a bit much.  You know this when you either want to turn it up, or turn it down.  I am fortunate to have two systems, and I am waiting on what i think will be revealing, dynamic, tingly and never fatiguing.  It gets no love here, touted as being boutique with low resale value.  Well hopefully I will not want to sell it! I should get my Audionet Pre1 G2 and the Mono Amps next week...can't wait.  It will be sweet!  BTW, my Mola Mola mates well with my Revel Salon2 Ultima 2's.  My Audionet will pair with my venerable 802N's...Ken
Yes goodsource...like the female voice can occasionally be...but it can also be oh so sweet...:)
Hi Jay, You do an amazing job with all of this tuff! Thanks!!  I will share my short amp ventures as some are pertinent to your discussion and responses:

My upgrade path started with my Classe SSP-800 and CA-2300 stereo amp.  This was years ago upgraded from very fine Parasound Halo stuff.
I was a happy man with nice components until my SSP crapped out and my search began.
I got PS Audio Stellar series in, and back it went.  Then I went all BHK with DAC, Pre and BHK-250 stereo amp.  It was better, but again the upgrade path led me to try an Audionet entry level Pre 1 G3 and an Auralic Vega G2 DAC.  I started to hear the resolution I crave.  Then came the Mola Mola Kaluga's.  Wow, I was blown away by the dynamics and extension.  Finally, I got in the Audionet Pre G2 with the Audionet Max mono amps.  These are amazing!  Especially the amps.  Great everything.  Bass, detail, resolution, but especially soundstage and imaging, never with fatigue.  They draw me in like nothing else I have heard.  I actually have two fairly reference systems.

BSMT is Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC, Audionet Pre G2, Audionet Max amps, and YG Hailey 2.2 speakers with REL subs.  I use all Kubala Sosna Elation cabling.  It all makes a difference.

FAMILY ROOM  Was Mola Mola Makua w internal Tambaqui and Mola Mola Kaluga amps running Revel Salon 2 speakers and REL subs  If I did not have the bsmt system I would never have known.  But I was always drawn in when going down there.

So I lugged the amps upstairs and inserted the Max amps with the Makua.  Wow.  There it was.  Amazing imaging and soundstage.  My  Salon 2's came to life like never before.  My lady, who is fairly tired of my upgrading and talking about it all the time, did have to agree.
I swapped in the Kaluga's downstairs, and the sparkle and magic was gone.  Not bad at all, but not what the Audionet Max's brought.

So now my very nice Mola Mola Kaluga's are for sale, and I have ordered another set of the Max's from GTT Audio.

The Mola Mola Kalugas are very nice.  The Audionet MAX's are simply amazing.

One other thing.  I had my very nice Audience AU 24SX cables initially.
I demo'd the KS Elation stuff, and damn it, they were better (to me, in my system).  So now I have replaced half of my cables with KS, and plan on the other one soon.  I do hear the best sound when all the cables match.

As you well know, the ability to swap components in and out of system is very revealing.  What an amazing hobby with all the choices and certainly all the opinions!  Soo many flavours of ice cream, but some ice cream shops are just way better than others!

Thanks again for all you do, and sorry so many seem to attack.  I know you would love the Audionet Max's and beyond!

Take care all, Ken

Hi Jay,  Love the Boz song.  I have been playing it for several years and alwasy get funny looks when I say Boz Scaggs!  The new amps sound great...revealing but not fatiguing.  I just saw Billy Strings at the Anthem in DC.  Wow.  So good and good sound.  I remember saying  'this is what live music (real music) sounds like!'  And I remember it was fatiguing!  But no rolled off highs for me, just need them smooth at the same time.  My Audionet Max amps and Pre G2 with my Tambauqui DAC do this for me!  Thanks again Jay!  Ken

I liked presentation #2 in the recent power cord comparison.  I felt #2 had fuller midrange, more chesty singing, more involved feeling.  I think often a sound that seems brighter is actually missing the midrange.  Would love to throw a Kubala - Sosna Realization cable in the comparison.  I have compared K-S to Audience Front Row and AU24SX.  Thanks Jay,  Ken

Jay thank you for collecting and humoring the assortment of social misfits who are abundant here!  Perhaps it keeps them off of other discussions.  Thank you for your efforts; always enlightening.  And thanks to most who are respectful of others opinions!

Hi Jay,  Good comparison of the Luxman and Gryphon.  It surprised me as i was not a Luxman fan prior.  comparing the Luxman to a Boulder is not apples to apples.

Now I know you are a man of means.  I know this for two reasons; 1) your uber exotic equipment, and 2) I signed up for your YouTube site!  So get an Audionet Stern and a pair of Heisenberg amps.  They will give your current amps a very big run for the money!  I am also a big fan of Kubala Sosna Elation and Realization cables.  The 'air and high end' described above is quite possibly a lack of meaty midrange. Bright / thin cables do this.  They accentuate the treble and sound brighter, not better. Looking forward to getting in the Audionet big boys!  I currently have the Audionet pre G2 and Max amps with Elation Cables. My front end is in a different room / different circuit. Nucleus+ > Upgraded Switch (JCAT M12 coming!) long run to my Muon Filter System (Supra CAT8) > Auralic Aries G2.1 WITH THE BOMB OF A CUSTOM SEAN JACOBS POWER SUPPLY (huge upgrade), USB to Tambaqui DAC.

I signed up like you asked, so let's do it!  Ken :)

Congratulations Jay on your website! I find some things very interesting in your journey. Either fortunately or unfortunately, your initial diatribe is repeated on every page. Look at all the amplifiers you said were great or may be the greatest! None of these compare to the equipment you know own and  tout. You and all of us have learned so much. One is that if you pay more you usually get nicer stuff. But so interesting that things you thought were maybe the best amps or nearly the best amps ever are now in your burial site. Anyway, now that you are more than Uber rich with your website,  please contact Bill at GTT and get in the Stern and Heisenberg amps to compare to what you were now using. I sound like a broken record I know. But I also know how good they sound! Ken

Good Morning Jay, @ron17, and @viber6,  Nice to hear from you all.

Jay - i am poking fun with the 'uber rich' comment.  Please forgive me! My point was maybe you could get some in for reviews now with all your cred!

Ron17 and viber 6, yes I am a GTT supporter and think the world of Bill as a salesman and honest guy.  He has a bit of my money.  I also started with a Mola Mola system of Makua with built in Tabaqui and Kaluga amps.  Beautiful in the family room, and drove my Salon 2's effortlessly.  Then I went (what I then called all in) for the Audionet Pre G2 and Max amps downstairs to go with my N802s.  My DAC downstairs was an  Auralic Vega.  I liked both systems.  But when I got my Tambaqui downstairs, the difference was subtly stunning (is that an oxymoron??).

I then sold the B and W's and upgraded to Hailey 2.1s for downstairs.  Now the difference was less than subtle.  The microdynamics, sparkle and just wanting to go down there.  Since I have Roon, and can play the same music on both systems, it is easy to walk up and down and compare in real time.  So I asked bill what was the difference?  Same DAC, etc.  He said the amps.  So I kept my Makua Preamp with internal Tambaqui and got another pair of Max's!  Wow.  The Salon 2's came to life!

The upstairs room is cathedral ceilings and the whole house long (family room, eat in, kitchen) and the tall Salon's fill the room, nicely aided by REL Carbon  Specials.

I liked the Salon 2s so much I lugged them downstairs to try.  They were too tall for my near positioned couch.  Back upstairs they went and thenIi got the Haileys.

This combo is amazing as well. It is the amps that are super fast, highly resolving, and non fatiguing.  And the Makua still looks great.  the amps sit below and are hardly noticeable.  My equipment is on the side upstairs, so except for the long speaker runs (homemade 8g copper with good solder) (under the floor) it looks and sounds great with speakers beside the fireplace.

i am working on my digital front end lately.  I have added an Auralic Aries G2.1 streamer and  it made a big improvement.  I then asked Sean Jacobs to make me a custom power supply for it, as i had heard about this.  It was more $ than my streamer, but the results are stunning.  Really.  I also enjoy a Muon Filter system in both  lodations and have a JCAT M12 coming soon!

Ironic to talk about sound.  My best Audiophile buddy moved to Florida (what was he thinking?) and I am here in Maryland.  Would love to get together with like minded folks!  Ken

1!

Hi @viber6,  both rooms are great. I know what you mean about the cathedral ceilings. Some recordings just go sky high. My upstairs system is no slouch it just doesn’t have the better streamer. It’s the lugging of the speakers up and down that’s a huge problem. I know I tried the salon 2’s downstairs and they were just too tall. I like both rooms I like sitting and listening critical in each room for the differences to appreciate. I am very fortunate. I didn’t think the Tambaqui was a small improvement over my Vega. It was very significant. I had tried the DAVE in-house in between . I was not so impressed. The upstairs room is also livelier. It has glass on one side and should have reflective issues but it does not seem to cause any. Downstairs is more cocoon like and I like that also. I wish you could come visit.

when I brought by maxes upstairs to see how they sounded versus the Kaluga‘s I was so impressed I immediately called Bill and ordered another pair. They were of course supposed to be here in three or four weeks. I believe her like four months. So I had no amplification downstairs. I bought a pair of Parasound  JC1+.

So disappointing they went right back.

Also note I did not take the pair of over 100 pound amps back downstairs!  I waited on the new ones no matter the issue!  Many people have a set of spares...not me just boxes.  I would have tried may but I am not into the buying, trying and returning. Well, just once!

Hi @viber6   Damn you.   really.   Now I am looking at a nice streamer upstairs to feed my makua  w tambaqui.

Thoughts?  I will keep my Nucleus, so oly need a streamer w USB output.
