My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

I remember a while back you mentioning not to mix class A or A/B amps with class D amps in a HT setup"

That is a silly, unilateral, arbitrary recommendation, guidance, and claim it is based on fantasy, whimsey, and a need by the claimant to appear expert, discriminating, and knowledgeable it makes no sense it is laughable on its face, premise and basis as you have now discovered, learned, and  revealed.
psnyder149"Since your expertise is so much more voluminous and well informed than the rest of us mere mortals, perhaps you can talk in terms of the differences in tonal characteristics of a mid 60’s rosewood vs maple necked Stratocaster informed by the differences of late 70’s models.  Or maybe it would be more informative to use references Marshal JMP vs JCM stacks with greenbacks vs. JBL cabines."
These references are to devices used in the creation of music that is not the goal, function, or purpose of this forum which is about music reproduction systems and the components, cables, and ancillary equipment necessary to build such a system it is evident, apparent, and obvious that you are in the wrong place and/or are otherwise confused, disoriented or misinformed .

It looks like Jay has locked up all discussion here. A polite, friendly, thoughtful poster mentioned a problem with how Jay has his components stacked between speakers and the comment is deleted it is the same as when we pointed out some of the problems Jay has with his electrical system that led him to promote expensive battery solutions to AC power and things got nasty fast.

I guess if you pay $50 USD monthly to Jay for audio advise you don't want any challenges and that is very strange why have a forum if others are not allowed to contribute?

tweak1Jay, in my opinion (like him or not) Ric has put you in check, but your response is "I'm done"! WTF?

I saw that Jay did respond to Ric previously in this thread and if you examine it you will see between Ric's posts is "Post removed

jays_audio_lab OP "I DO NOT WANT TO DO DYI! I don’t want to be part of an experiment like Frankenstein. There are other threads and outlets that cater to that type of stuff. Why aren’t you there? Why do you come back? STAY IN YOUR LANE AND WORRY ABOUT DOING YOUR THING AND STOP DRAGGING ME INTO YOUR BUSINESS! Maybe I am buried in your dreams and you sleepwalk chanting my name. Maybe my system inspires you for a greater purpose in your life? Who the hell knows - all i ask is for you to keep my name out of your mouth!"

You sound very angry, disturbed, and upset but it is not for you to limit, restrict, or discourage users, contributors, and members here on Audiogon from stating, expressing, or sharing their thoughts, beliefs and experience this forum is open to all if you find a user objectionable, offensive, or inappropriate you should notify the moderators who will manage the situation according to the forum's rules and guidelines.

As for DIY you are leaving a lot of performance "on the table" by refusing, rejecting, and dismissing this very valid method, approach, and practice.

This thread as are all threads are open to all if you seek to establish, create, and monitor you're own thread free of interference, conflict, and  objections you are of course free to create your own site as did millercarbon.

It is now obvious, apparent, and indisputable that this has become a "sales thread" for Stromtank and what ever other products Jay decides to represent, promote, and sell of course as a new dealer he will not have access to many of the premium lines of music reproduction equipment. For guidance he may want to research and review what former Audiogon user "millercarbon" has done after leaving the group for what I can only assume, surmise, and conclude were his commercial activities here he has his own web site now.

Jay if you object to my contributions, presence, or thoughts you are free to contact the moderators and seek my dismissal as I explained I am under no obligation to seek your approval before sharing, expressing, or explaining my thoughts, beliefs, or opinions you are now here to sell music reproduction system components and trying to conceal that simple fact reflects poorly on you and your standards.

If you think you can threaten, intimidate, and bully me to comply with your requirements you are wrong.

Posting thoughts, considerations, and proposals is not "dismantling" and this web site is open to all it is not exclusively for any one's expressions.

zprr"What has been your “contribution” to this thread exactly?"
Apparently this thread is enjoyed by a group of very sensitive people who feel deep emotional connections with this thread and who are made threatened, uncomfortable, or uneasy by any opinion, reference, or claim which conflicts with their sense of security, safety, and comfort that is why it is so odd that I was the one threatened with getting beat up by Jay in the now deleted post where he also made insult to my testicles so don’t try and "paint me" as the disrupter of this thread.

jays_audio_lab OP"It’s clear that your views or sentiments about what we have built here throughouit’s clear your views aren’t appreciated here (see comments above this one), why are you here? Isn’t better to go find something that aligns with your beliefs?

It is correct and accurate to say that there are those who have expressed substantial, significant, and even "extreme" preference that I leave, ignore, and not return to this thread, including a violent threat. As I mentioned earlier it is apparent and obvious that some users here are very emotional, tender, sensitive people so of course people like that would respond and comply and not be here however I do not really care if people like me and most important is that I do not "defer" to bullies.

The idea, approach, and concept of using a single "loom" of cable is almost guaranteed to produce and result in a satisfactory outcome however that outcome is highly unlikely to be much better than "satisfactory" and that is because of the flawed, erroneous, mistaken "logic" applied to this. If you use that reasoning you will buy something like a McIntosh system and use all McIntosh electronics and speakers because you want it all the same but as you can see that makes no sense. But the choice of a single "loom" can make you feel safe, comfortable, and secure which I sense will be desirable and preferable to many in this thread who are very emotional and very sensitive people as has been demonstrated previously in this thread.

thezaks"A nice thought about high resolution audio files on Drop Box, etc. However, I think the idea is to get folks to watch the videos on YT and to continue building the subscribers. If WC provided these high resolution audio files, then some/many folks might skip YT altogether and only use the high resolution files. This would somewhat defeat the purpose for the YT channel."

One thing to keep in mind is that Jay has made the shift, change, and transition to an actual business and I think most everyone here wishes him the best with his venture. Sharing the files could be done a a fee-basis as you note generating for Jay an additional stream of revenue to join his You Tube channel and his equipment importing/distribution business which is just "getting off the ground" with his battery power supplies. I think sharing the actual file will actually increase his visibility, prominence, and authority, because many people understand, recognize, and accept that You Tube offers very low quality audio and Jay would not have that restriction or limitation on his shared files in Drop Box and those users will then download those files where they previously ignored You Tube. You can see in this thread that some struggle to hear any difference in Jay’s videos and some of the reason and explanation for that may be the You Tube audio quality.

As I’ve mentioned previously it is apparent andeven obvious that many users in this forum a very sensitive, caring, emotional people who prefer complete, structured, controlled "safe environments" and for those there is You Tube while other people would like to hear the actual file.

thezaks"it would be fun for someone to try it out. Even better for all of us if WC tried it."

If by WC you refer to Jay then I think you need to consider, evaluate, and respect the position that Jay is now in because he has "crossed the threshold" and is now an officially designated, authorized, franchised importer/distributor of the Stromtank product at least according to Jay as I understand him and that means he has a responsibility to his vendor to represent the product fairly and not "undercut" it in any way which he would do if he promoted a less expensive "do it yourself" option or alternative and that is only fair for everyone involved in the product.

Also as I have mentioned it seems that Jay’s followers are very sensitive, caring individuals and are more comfortable with complete, integrated, self-standing solutions so they would prefer Stromtank to DIY just the same as they prefer You Tube to retrieving actual hi-res files online as has been discussed earlier in this thread.

Jay is also probably very busy trying to get dealers to sign up for this product because it is probably very limited and restricted how many he can sell here and we I’m sure are wishing him the best regarding that but may be others will try the DIY "approach" and share the results and outcome with us.

jays_audio_lab OP"Jay is a dealer for stromtank...not the distributor...the distributor is someone else "

That then is my error and mistake and I apologize English is not my first language and some times I get confused while translating in my head. The Stromtank seems to be an unusual product and design and it is interesting how some people here are trying to "reverse engineer" the product to develop an alternative that may be more specifically tailored to there needs as well as assembled at a more convenient price but it sure looks like a "messy"alternative to me that I would not like in my Music Reproduction Systems.

It is a surprise and very unexpected that Jay is only now discovering hi-res streaming as through Qobuz because Jay has portrayed himself as a daring, fearless, aggressive explorer of new horizons but of course I praise, applaud, and congratulate Jay for breaking out of his technological "comfort zone" and because Jay has many followers, admirers, and imitators I also hope that they are inspired by Jay's bold launch in to the world of current digital technology and consider following him in to the world of what digital has to offer.

What I am finding confusing about this proposed $16,000 USD battery for Music Reproduction Systems is as a dealer why wouldn't by Jay a demo be offered? It has been shown by verifiable fact that the videos produced by Jay suffer inherent audible, sonic, sound defects so it does not seem realistic, practical, or reasonable to expect the customer to rely soley and exclusively on the video to arrive at a purchasing decision. I am not in the US so it does not matter directly to me but I am not understanding the approach here.

Upon consideration a substantial part of Jay's struggles may be the "third-world" quality of his electric and internet service and he is trying to adjust or compensate for those systems faults, weaknesses and deficiencies of course I am just speculating here but the US is known for its aging, obsolete infrastructure so any of the problems Jay is trying to overcome may be very real so the batteries may be a proper, appropriate, reasonable solution.

viber6"There are too many variables here.  To proper assess dsd as a format, you need the same recording in different formats."
That is a valid, truthful, and accurate statement it is impossible with the video provided to determine with any certainty or authority characteristics properly attributed to the dsd format itself. This is a situation that Jay has previously used where different variables are introduced which is an outright violation of scientific method and renders useless any conclusions arrived  at.

The current, present situation is also complicated because other flaws in the video process or Jay remain such as the distortion, imbalance, spurious noises and other issues that have previously been shown, demonstrated, and explained and I susepct that some of these issues are not related directly to use of You Tube as a "source."

viber6"Be sure to play a recording you used in the previous video.  This is the only disciplined way to tell the differences"

That would be "scientific method" but I do not think Jay understands, accepts, or endorses such an approach, discipline, or technique he is one of the audiophiles who goes by "feelings" when he listens and how he "feels" about the product he is promoting actually developing any experiment that could be duplicated or repeated by others is something he won't do because he is the "EXPERT" and wishes to remain the final, absolute, unchallenged authority on all matters regarding his system as has been demonstrated which of course is his right.

I think contributor carey1110 should be recognized, congratulated, and applauded for stating:

"Sometimes I can’t handle the truth"

There is a lot of that going on in this thread from those who cling to approaches such as ignoring, rejecting, and violating even basic "scientific method" practices and protocals such as changing only one variable per test and that is actually fine! There is "truth" and there is how you "feel" and for many those "feelings" are what direct their decisions and that is justifiable for them. It is only when they object, complain, or criticize those who use a more disciplined approach that we see the result here which is leading no where because as others have stated their should be room for every one here and this is something I believe Jay knows completely.

It is easy to see the various, multiple, compound problems with these "evaluative" videos continues without attention, disruption, or resolution. The biggest issue plaguing this undertaking and effort are the underlying house voltage delivery inadequacies and uncorrected deficiencies that have been previously revealed, explained, and detailed. As I previously mentioned parts of the US are known for "third-world" quality utility delivery systems but that should not hinder, dissuade, or prevent Jay from attempting their proper correction.

What is particularly odd about the "evaluative" video is that uses power cords as the variable yet power is the primary, underlying, over riding defficiency in this music reproduction system so you are hearing distortions, anomalies, and irregularities that are the result and consequence of the power problems plus all the issues previously defined with the You Tube production itself which includes spurious unexplained signals

It is strange, unusual, and odd that some here can't have "fun" if others reveal actual data, facts, and simple, basic, elemental  deficiencies in something as basic as a music reproduction system's electrical foundation. Pointing out these irregularities is not "complaining" but just a sign of living in the real world where facts, science, and the human brain can work together to yield improved performance,  outcome, and results.

It should also be mentioned given your objections that the poster here is selling, promoting, and recommending battery power systems that cost tens of thousands of US dollars EACH of course that is fine and but for many it is wiser, more "expedient" and possible even safer to call an electrician first.

You can have fun with a broken toy but I prefer a fully functioning "toy."

Jay it would be thoughtful, considerate, and prudent of you to consider and contemplate the use of EQ in your system and I make that comment even though like many of us I would not have it in my system. The reason I say that is because of the distortion that has been demonstrated, shown, and revealed to be in your system which many have reasoned comes from your AC power foundation and the problems that come with it. These distortions it can be almost certain vary with conditions and whether other things on on your lines such as the air conditioner or welder so an EQ would let you correct that quickly, easily, and reliably where as switching power cords involves shutting down the system and restarting which is not always even practical so @bulldogger made a good suggestion that I hope you will not dismiss, ignore, or reject.

Of course the ideal, preferred, and best solution would be to identify, isolate, nad correct your existing AC problems at the source but that seems to be not possible for you maybe you are in a rental and if that's the case I can see why you use battery Stromtank but I don't think you can put amplifiers on that.

My background was in the sciences before I went into business so it is a mystery and puzzle to me that some people deliberately, intentionally, and willfully avoid knowledge, experience, and information that has the potential to enhance and improve their lives I have seen this many times. When any of my hiring managers is interviewing new hires for roles such as engineer we probe to discover and learnt the person's alignment toward exploration and those who are already decided, fixed, and rigid in their thinking and analysis are rejected. Of course the hiring process is not perfect and some of those people get hired any way but I can tell you they do not last long in a culture of innovations such as my companies they will usually quit with in 90 days or so.

viber6"Understand that your system, no matter what it is, employs some form of EQ"

This is absolutely valid, accurate, and true it does not matter as a practical issue how much Jay may want to avoid EQ and deny, reject, and/or ignore its potential benefits in his system because he already has EQ and it is not only in his speaker system crossover network but in his R.I.A.A.stage with in his phono preamplifier and he has acknowledged, recognized, and accepted that he is using cables to apply equalization which is an unreliable method and not recognized as best practice for correcting his issues which we must remember is complicated by AC power delivery problems that have driven him to advocate, promote, and sell expensive battery "solution" for those problems which have also been revealed in a graph posted previously in this thread.

I think the fundamental, underlying, operative problem here is that because he is in a rental Jay can not do much about the power problems which have been guessed to include an arc welder or similar device, tool, or equipment on his "dedicated" circuit.

I do not understand some of the loud objections to considering, evaluating, and exploring the potential for EQ to resolve other problems that can not otherwise be corrected because it is one way to "fix" the high frequency distortions intruding upon the signal and originating somewhere on the AC lines.

viber6"Innovation is dependent on being open minded and flexible, ready to experiment."

Yes and yet you see in this very thread what happens when someone suggests, proposes, or raises a new idea or one that has not previously been properly evaluated in the context of the discussion that the response is sometimes one of vile profanity, ugly personal attacks, threats  of a crude and even sexual nature - all of these things have happened in this thread and all I am trying to so is have discussion about the things that are appropriate to what is being undertaken by Jay.

If an EQ solves the problems with your Music Reproduction system that that settles the matter for many and if they are upset, disturbed, or bothered by the use of EQ of course they can avoid it but in Jay's case he is going to have to tackle electrical AC power system issues one way or the other sooner either by getting bigger batteries or fixing the AC itself but until then EQ might be of some help to him.

It is interesting how different manufacturers use different approaches to achive results that are comparable.

Also I do not want to hurt any one's feelings I know there  are many sensitive, caring, emotional people here that helps makes Jay's journey special thank you.

I am thankful, grateful, and appreciative of the moderators who delete posts that are insulting, degrading, threatening or violent in nature or tone. They have been diligent, attentive, and thorough in acting to have this thread comply with Audiogon's clear rules, policies, and requirements and I would think that those who value, support, or admire Jay and his efforts, journey, and exploration would feel the same way. Jay you may want to explain this to your followers because they are not helping you although I understand that they think they are!

The design of speakers, drivers, crossovers, and cabinets is an interesting aspect  and there are many different approaches and it can be a surprise to see what can result when real engineers tackle the challenges here is an example of what happens when there is an exchange of ideas among "equal minds".

jay's_audio_lab:"o clue what you are referring to by saying i deleted a post"

I never said you deleted a post no one here can do that except the moderators or the poster himself. What you do is try to silence, banish, and attack all those who dare question your might, invincible, powerful authority! Here's another example

"Please take that privately. No need to turn this into something else. Maybe go over to the thread where he is posting about me. "

Well I am not going away and I will continue to participate in an active, thoughtful way and sorry to tell you but I will not fix your electrical problems you'll have to do that your self "fella."

Good luck promoting your $50 USD monthly "raw" video offer I'm sure they are quite exciting!
