My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Roxy,

If you really want to amuse yourself pick up a copy of the Princeton Gazette on Monday Dec 17th. Might be a story in there about a elderly man’s body parts + Pawn Shop Fiddle found stuffed inside a D’agostino Amp Flight case in a Church parking lot on the night of the 16th. Only identification found will be a ID bracelet on the wrist that says GOD + a shirt with the Image of a Rainbow on it with the words I LOVE RANE printed underneath in Pink/Purple .That’s what my crystal ball says anyway

Cant respect anybody that pairs Luxman with McIntosh....and thinks that’s Audio Nirvana. Clueless as always...but hey...consistency counts!!

AYRE Amps are not in the same league as Arc, Dag, Lux and many others.  YES I owned the Ayre. Still have the KXR-20 that I will trade in for something else at some point.  AYRE MXR or VXR are available for about 60% of MSRP when they show up used. I think thats certainly a good deal BUT the Power Amps are hard to unload even at that price (About 14-15K for Monos). The Pre is much easier to ditch because its up there with the best of them.
Im certainly hoping your not referring to me above.. Not to Rain on your parade BUT my Comment was made DIRECTLY after having a personal exchange with the OP which HE initiated AFTER you posted your comment proclaiming Luxman is better than DAG. I am not the one who is misunderstanding anything.
I didnt mean JUST the combo. He doesnt believe he ever said the Luxman Pre was better than the Dag Pre except in that particular instance/shootout.  He believes HIS words are being twisted and misconstrued. Maybe you should send him a private message so you get on the same page.
To clarify...Jay did NOT say that the Lux C900 is better than the Dag Pre-Amp. He suggested that with those particular amps he used that he preferred the sound of the C900. The Synergy was better. He did not say that the Luxman Combo was better than the Dag Combo.
If you go back a year or so (Dont bother) when I had the Dag 400's Viber pretty much said they were overpriced "jewelry" and thats all you were paying for...not performance.  And here he is talking them up....go figure. Sometimes its just best to "tune out" certain people and bypass their comments. Dementia runs in my family too...Cant wait till I turn into Viber Jr. When I start praising PS AUDIO Gear somebody please put me out of my misery.

If I could remember where I read it I would have posted it. It was either Stereophile, TAS, Part time Audiophile or one of the UK Digital mags I subscribe to most likely.  I own NONE of these Dacs so have no skin in the game.

Mr Decibel...please try to behave. Why cant you be civilized like me? I think that should be your New Years resolution. LOL

Within the past couple of months a Shoot-Out of Dacs was done in one of the trades.  The Mola Mola DAC (Around 9K I think) couldnt even beat out the freakin PS AUDIO DAC which you can get for a little over 3K.  Thats pretty pathetic in my book.
I dont believe everything I read in the trades when it comes to a "review" of 1 particular item...cause we all know they dont trash anything otherwise the manufacturers wouldnt send them any freebies to review down the road.  Shoot-outs are another matter entirely...whether its in a publication OR somebody like the OP. The person was just comparing 3 or 4 Dacs at the same time and expressed the strengths and weakness in each one.  I think the conclusion was that the Mola wasn't any better then the PS Audio and the other 2 might have been the Benchmark 3 and Border Patrol which are also MUCH cheaper than the Mola. I could be wrong about the last 2 models tho.

I was just kiddin with you Mr D (And being only slightly sarcastic).

I'm fessing up regardless of how bad it makes me look.  It was not the MOLA DAC that was compared to the PS Audio Dac. It was the MOJO Mystique V3 Dac.  My apologies for dissing the Mola. Dementia runs in the family so that's my excuse and Im sticking to it. I also didn't say the reviewer said one was better than the other. But for 3X the amount of dough you would have hoped the Mojo would spank the PS Audio and it didn't. This shootout appears to have been conducted BEFORE the PS Audio "Snowstorm" Dac Upgrade (Or whatever its called) so that's even more troubling.

Dont worry CuriousJim. The OP doesnt want any blood on his hands. Can you imagine the headlines the next day if this thread ceased to exist.  "Aspiring Violinist Drowns himself in Princeton Church Lavatory". The only clue left behind as to the troubled mans demise was a note in his right hand which simply reads "God is Dead".
Ditto.  When a person brags about their lowly C47 and then has the audacity to trash some of the best gear in the hobby its just mind boggling. All the insecurities could not fit on a roll of toilet paper. Says his SPEAKERS are the component most in need of an upgrade....are you kidding me?? States he can afford the ARC/DAG's etc but would not waste his money....YET he cant come up with the meager scratch to get the Luxman 900U to go with his LUX 900 AMP.  The LUX 900U is MUCH Cheaper than the other Pre's he says he can afford.  Doesnt make any sense at all....hence the monikor TROLL.
Yep there it is.  "Lots of Gear" and yet after having SO MUCH experience we end up with Unknown Crappy speakers, A Luxman Amp paired with a Bottom of the Line McIntosh Pre-Amp.  I AM IN AWE of the expertise and vast knowledge of synergy that put this impeccable system together. ALL HAIL THE TROLL...We're Not Worthy!!!

Well WCSS if those are the new rules I know what pieces of gear we are gonna hear about again and again.  Sing along with me....My Apologies to James Taylor in advance for butchering his song.

Now Ive Heard MYTEK and Ive Heard RANE

Ive Played my Violin in public bathrooms now and then

It seems most days I cannot find a Friend

So I wind up in the Audiogon Forums again.

Here is Mike from Suncoast's take on the Paradigm line compared to the Salon 2's today.

Re: Paradigm Persona 5F and 7F vs Salon 2s
Yes, compare, just have a bag of cotton balls ready for that Paradigm tweeter. Ear bleeding is a real possibility.

In Fairness you have done the same thing...including making choices based on Mike's opinion. For example couple of months ago you stated you couldnt wait to hear the Ayre KXR-20...but then when Mike told you it wouldnt beat the Ref 10 you decided not to try it because of what Mike said.  Kind of hypocritical....just sayin.
SHHHH....I just went AWOL from the Witness Protection Program. I have the REAL Mueller report hidden in one of my D'agostino Flight cases. What they don't want you to know is that Melania was born a man....I couldn't believe it.  Keep that hush hush and dont tell anybody I was here OK?

I find this amusing to say the least.  Viber states above:

"The stand turned the rolled off Dag 250 into a high clarity Sim. The guitar and voice were both startlingly clear, but there was no harshness. It was just REAL, the unvarnished truth, smoothness without sweetness. From now on, all amp shootouts should be done WITH the stand."

Now if you go back to when WCSS acquired the Dag 400's he put them on the floor WITHOUT a Stand.  I told him he needed a stand to get the best performance. At that time VIBER Chimed in to say the Stand wouldn't make any noticeable difference to the sound and it would have the same tonal character. Now he is doing a complete 360 and saying EVERYTHING needs a Stand.  LOL   Totally clueless.

VIBER,

If you use the Post Office/EMS etc there are no taxes/duties on packages coming from outside the USA.  You only get nailed if you use FEDEX/UPS/DHL etc   80% of my dealings are with European customers. If you have to use FED/UPS etc you can always have a lower value placed on the forms...unless the package is insured for X Amount.

EMS in some countries is short for "Express Mail".

You would have to find out the size/weight restrictions from the country the stuff is coming from to see if the Post Office would accept it. Obviously FEDEX etc are more lenient and take bigger/heavier packages. I only ship to Europe...not the other way around.

I have a FEDEX account and they do offer VERY large discounts thru a "shadow" subsidiary that few know about.  If I ship a 10 Pound medium size package...say 18x24x5... to Europe going thru "Normal" FEDEX/UPS etc they want $500-600 and it arrives in Europe a few days later. Using the "shadow" system they don't want the public to know about I can ship the same exact item for $90-100.  They may have these same options on packages Coming FROM other countries...but you have to factor in the Customs charges if the person on the other end is going to insure for full value. I never Insure anything and have had no problems in 33 years sending at least a couple of thousand items.

2 Sides to every story, he said she said, wouldn't want to incur all the lawyers expenses to prove im right and hope those expenses are paid by the defendant on top of any compensation I am owed. Lawyers are the only ones who win. Sometimes its best to suck it up and find a way to let it go. I got burned for 4K on Audio Mart..sent the money and got nothing in return. Know what?? It was my own damn fault for being too trustworthy. Lesson learned
Im the one who got nailed for 4K...not WCSS. In my case the guy said he was in Maryland...and then in later adds he posted he said he was in Chicago. The payments went thru Paypal to an address in Canada. The guy cashed the money at a bank and closed the account in Canada. Neither Paypal or my Credit Card company could divulge any info on the seller without a subpoena or whatever even thou they know I got screwed.  Again...MY Fault but I would have hoped for more help from the companies involved. Legally they had to protect the scammers privacy rights over mine
Not true 3-4 years ago. If you paid with a Paypal balance you were screwed. At that time paying with a PP Balance was like handing somebody CASH....no protection. I have been using Paypal since the late 1990's and have done about 30,000 Transactions thru them so please dont tell me how Paypal has worked over the past 20+ years.

EBAY started in 1995....Paypal was not associated with EBAY until years later;

You obviously did not pay with a PAYPAL BALANCE for your items. You paid with your Credit Card. Had you paid with a Paypal balance for at least the 1st 15-17 years that Paypal WAS connected with EBAY you would have lost your money if you didn't receive your item. So obviously you DONT know the rules that Paypal played by in the past. Just another example of you showing your ignorance about yet another topic.

.

Geometry was never one of my better subjects Father Guido Sarducci. Thanks for the correction.

Dear Mr Decibel,

I take exception to your bringing my name up. You state you haven't posted in awhile because of me and others. For the record...up until 2 or 3 days ago I didn't even know who that other party was nor had I ever responded towards him in the past. So your going to have to come up with another excuse.  My last Communication with Viber I was trying to help him with my vast knowledge of shipping to/from other Countries. I haven't said an Ill word to him or anybody else in quite some time.

As far as the last "incident" it all started innocently with me giving my experience of getting burned on Audio Mart and sharing it with the board and WCSS since he was in a similar situation. I cant help another intervened with his "thoughts". I thought it was quite considerate of me to keep my total disgust off this thread and have it out in a private setting instead. The other party obviously took the high road and aired the dirty laundry for all to see to try to gain support.

Prior to this WCSS filed a missing persons report on me because I hadn't written anything in quite some time.  So I am calling you out for using me as an excuse why you haven't posted in awhile. Total you know what. In the future if you have a problem with me by all means take the time to send me a PM. I PROMISE I wont post your private message for the world to see.

According to the 24 Page ONGOING report on Audio Shark it appears the Favorite room for several people features the T+A CD Player, The DAVE Dac, Dagostino Amps and Magico Speakers (M6 I believe). Why they paired the T+A with the DAVE instead of the Chord BLU2 Spinner is something I would like to know. Its also the Fave room of Mike (so Far) the owner of Audio Shark and Suncoast Audio. He doesnt carry DAG so one certainly cant say he is bias. The AXPONA Report on Audio Shark is HUGE with Photos of an enormous amount of rooms so I would suggest all check it out.

Jetter,

Problem with Salk's isnt the sound. Its the 50% Beating your going to take if you ever try to re-sell them. (Provided you purchased them Brand New with ZERO discount buying them direct). Do yourself a favor and buy a Used pair then your downside is limited when/if you flip them.

I just sold my Soundscape "8"s this weekend. Couldnt believe I had 4 inquiries in the first 36 hours of listing them.

Not only is there no reading comprehension but some people cant put together a coherent sentence.

Mr Decibel,

At your age being confused is quite normal behavior. Next year you will be saying "Who is WCSS...Who is this Viber guy...Why am I here??"   Embrace it!!  :)

Just play the entire First Side (3 songs) of Dire Straits "Making Movies" album. Probably the best produced album at that time and a perfect album side.
Had you kept the Ref 10 I would guess the 160M but since you ditched that...HMM...Mike carries Vac so maybe the 200IQ?  I wouldnt think you would stretch for the new 450 VAC or whatever that Monster is called.
Unfortunately there isnt an IGNORE button. I would wager that Word for Word your posts accumulate for 50% of the entire thread for the past year. Its absurd and sad at the same time. No matter what anybody says including the OP you just keep going on and on about the same points that nobody gives a damn about...except the Troll and Father Guido Sarducci. Eventually the Troll figured he was no longer wanted by the masses and had the good sense to tuck his tail, his bad sense of humor and go into hibernation. For Gods Sake please get a life....somewhere else.  We dont need to hear about Clarity or your Boutique Merrill Audio Amps again and again...you have substituted them for you beloved RANE at this point.  Its unfortunate the OP cant banish you from ruining his thread till the end of days. I would bet ANYTHING he would if he could.

#Ron17

+100 or more

On the bright side the Troll from the great white north finally left. 1 Down 1 To Go

Then start a NEW Topic somewhere else about Guitar Players and stop disrespecting the OP's wishes.

Al,

Great post BUT Reno Hi-Fi isnt restricted by that "territory" issue. I have a PASS dealer about 10 minutes away from me and I purchased a First Watt SIT-3 from Reno last week and its arriving on Monday.

Here is a link to Kal's latest review from 10 days ago on the new Hegel line of 3-5 Channel Power Amp which he used with the ARC MP-1.  Mike at Suncoast carries Hegel. Also compares the Hegel vs the Benchmark AHB2....and the Parasound which has a dismal showing. WCSS might prefer the Hegel cause it has more Thump.

https://www.stereophile.com/content/music-round-97-hegel-c53-dspeaker-anti-mode-x4

Kal Rubinson...the King of Multi-Channel Reviews uses Mono Block Benchmark AHB2's going into an Audio Research MP-1 Preamp for his 5.1 setup. No need for a Controller unless you need room correction OR Home Theatre. If your just going for Music this is an excellent setup and the AHB2 has adjustable gain. Its unfortunate there arent many Multi Channel Pre-Amps left in existence. I also have the Conrad Johnson MET-1 Tube Multi Channel Pre Amp.

Viber,

Please tell me where your getting your info on Kal and Classe Amps. Ive had NUMEROUS Personal discussions with Kal and he has NEVER even mentioned Classe....EVER. My last exchange with him was 2-3 days ago. He definitely doesnt use them in any of his MC Setups currently

Ive had the C900U for almost a year now. Came in the same deal as the XA-25. It was just a matter of time to complete the set. Now whats next after the SIT-3 tomorrow....T+A, Accuphase, Vac..who knows?  :)

Jetter, Here is my current lineup of Amps. Please let me know which ones you would favor the XA-25 over.

Dag 400 Monos, Arc 160M, Luxman M900U, Audio Note Jinro.

I also recently purchased the Valvet E2 and I have the First Watt SIT-3 coming tomorrow. I have a friend who had the XA-25 (He sold it to me in a bulk deal) and he also has the Valvet and Sit-3 in his lineup...he prefers both of those considerably over the XA-25 and I know and trust his ears/taste etc.

So the XA-25 is at the bottom of my 7 amp pile. Why on earth would I feel compelled to use it? Im sure its great bang for the buck for people that are financially challenged. You are more than welcome to it. It was used for 4 months by the prior owner.

Viber,

The gain on the Sigma (29) would NEVER work with the ARC MP-1 Pre which Kal has been using for almost 10 years now. The Highest gain value that can be used is 23. This is why Kal's favorite Amp for MC is the Benchmark AHB2 which has a variable gain option. Think you might have to dig up your "articles" on the internet....you might find that if they exist they are much older than you think.

SIT-3 I am told is unlike anything I have ever had or heard before. There is nothing else like it so the price tag is not of consequence. Nobody has stated the XA-25 is unique in any way. Its not a compelling story to me.

The only foreign language I speak is Russian so I have no clue what your last comment means nor can I be bothered to look. Are we done now with the audiogon inquisition?
