mmf-5 arm adjustment

Hi, the cartridge on my mmf-5 isn't parallel to the record surface. I remember that someone on here said that the arms are sometimes attached incorectly at the factory. Is it possible to adjust the arm, or will I have to get a replacement from Music Hall?

The Pro-Ject manuals are far superior. My advice to anyone purchasing a Music Hall turntable is to download the manual for the "equivalent" Pro-Ject model.
If your arm is not parallel to the record surface.
You can adjust the VTA on the MMF-5 by loosening the 2 screws on the base of the arm using the Allen-wrench that came with the table. You can then lift or lower the arm as needed, as Deedar has said. You also need to check the vtf or the amount of tracking force you are using this will also affect the vta. Set your vtf then check to see that your arm is parallel to the record surface, or maybe just slightly down in the back. You should fine tune by listening, adjusting vta and vtf.

Good luck and good listening

Download manual for Pro-Ject 2 which has instructions for adjusting the azimuth. Pro-Ject also manufactures the mmf-5 and the tonearms are essentially indentical. You must remove the anti-skate stub to access the azimuth adjustment screw.

Boxingnum,

I'm assuming that you are talking about horizontal in the axis of the tonearm. I'm not familiar with the project 1.2 arm, but if it is similar to the project 9 on my MMF 7, there may be an Allen screw hidden under the stem for the anti-skate mechanism. Just loosen it enough to be able to carefully roll the arm back and forth until you're happy with the alignment. This is allowing you to adjust the top pivot point on the vertical axis gimbal so there probably won't be much travel.

BTW, BEFORE you get into this double check that the needle is or is not perpendicular to the cartridge body. The implication is that many time this is not the case and the correct alignment may indeed have the cartridge body alittle off horizontal. So, try to go by the needle and not just the cartridge body. Tough to see! A better way to check maybe using the HFNRR LP.

Have you tried talking with Roy Hall?

Thanks for the response Deedar, but do you know if there's any way to adjust the horizontal alignment of the cartridge?
You can adjust the VTA on the MMF-5 by loosening the 2 screws on the base of the arm using the allen-wrench that came with the table. You can then lift or lower the arm as needed.
That's the trouble with MMF. You realy can't.
If Regas can go away with arm-spacers(to increase VTA), for MMF can't tell you if it will work.
To decrease VTA you can use plastic spacers between cartridge and armshell thus playing between margins of tracking force and sort-of VTA.
