Mcintosh mc-255

Why is the mc-255 amp considered a class g amp. Is class g better than a mac amp with the autoformers.

Class G is an amplifier operating system. The output stage it is connected to can be Class A (single device), Class A (multiple devices) or Class AB (multiple devices). Class G switches the rail voltages to the output stage from low voltage to higher voltage for musical peaks where power/watts are needed to avoid clipping distortion.

Class G allows an amplifier to have temporarily more power on music peaks and remain within weight constraints (more capacitance). Imagine how big and heavy a McIntosh 5 to 7 channel home theater amp would be with 5 to 7 autoformers!

Class G is not new! It has been around since the late 70's. Soundcraftsman I believeĀ  was the first to market this design.
