one of the best things about mac pre amps are the phono stage. unlike lots of manufacturers, the phono board is not an afterthought, and mac has been making consistantly great(and incredibly quiet) phono sections since the beginning. given the 2200 is among the finest pres in audio, i think its safe to say that you will have to spend a considerable amount of money to improve things dramatically. investing in the table/arm/cartridge would be the first thing to do.
