To show the onscreen menu for configuration, the HTS 7.1 requires a video display device connected to either "S-Video 1" or "Composite Video 1".
For speakers, it is always a personal preference. However, the Monitor Audio Silver 50 or 100 series are very excellent speakers at the $1k area. They are extremely detailed with a lot of high frequency resolution. Elac speakers are also very excellent at any level and will not have as much high frequency push as the Monitor Audio. Sometimes people do not want a very bright speaker like Monitor Audio.
