Check the cable from your phono. I had the KR9600 about 48 years ago. I believe it is a very powerful receiver at 120wpc? I liked the tiny power level meters at the very top of the tuner dials and it lit up a nice blue.

I have a problem with my Kenwood KR 9600 receiver. The volume “surges” or gets intermittently loud when I am playing music through the phono inputs. It does not happen in tuner mode. Is this a capacitor or power supply issue? I hope someone might be able to steer me in the right direction before I start trial and error replacement of components.
