Go to the Elusive Disc website and type in "John Williams" in the search box in the vinyl category, there are quite a few. One that looks interesting has him conducting various of his compositions with the Berlin Philharmonic-- it looks to be a live recording. I read a story somewhere that he had not initially intended to have them perform the Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back, but the brass players from the orchestra approached him and asked if they could play it, and even had gotten the music scores for it. It's the last piece on the two record set. There's also a Reference Recordings LP of the Dallas Symphony winds playing his music, if you want to hear a different sound.

No, but I subscribe to the Berlin Phil's digital concert hall so I'm going to be listening to the concert that the record came from this weekend (if the thunderstorms stay away long enough to plug in my system). Given the quality of the Berlin Philharmonic's recordings that I have, I'd expect it to sound pretty good, even from a (likely) digital master. I would expect the BPO's performance to be top-notch. As for the RR, I would expect the sonics would be excellent, as with all of their recordings from Meyerson Center. |
