I'm sure they are nice and I could spring for that amount of money. But I really do want tone controls despite purist's opinions on the matter.
John Miller Preamps. Super 6 or Octal 6 Impressions?
I have a pair of quicksilver mid-mono's I am currently driving with the preamp section from a Sansui AU555a I restored. I was looking into tube preamps ~ $1,000. I know that isn't much money, but still not ready to dive completely into tubes.
Personally, I am also a fan of tone controls, which is why I was looking at John Miller's products listed in the title. His business is tomcat audio and he has been building tube amps/preamps for a long time.
Do any have either of these products (Super 6 or Octal 6)? Can you share your impressions?
Or any other piece of used/new gear that is a tube preamp with tone controls and < $1500 max that totally blew you away. Most of my listening experience has been with restored vintage solid state. I built the Pass Labs ACA, and its sound in my system is where my happy place is (as are the quick silver mid-monos running matched EL34s and genelex 6922 gold lions), if that helps.
It would be most helpful to avoid responses along the lines of, "hey, just get this piece of gear for 3-10 times the price you listed and you will be all set." :)
