Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

frogman,

re Maynard Ferguson.

The first 2 links I enjoyed the music. "Jam Session" was released in 1955 and "Maynard 61" was released in 61 (obviously).

The Kenton Big Band link is from a 1950 release "Stan Kenton Presents" and yes the high pitched trumpet playing by Maynard on that is quite annoying.

The only inaccuracy I see is that you stated Ferguson started playing continuously in those high registers while blowing out his lungs through the trumpet was something he did later in his career. This is not true as the session dates above attest to. It seems to me that Maynard played that way when it was called for in the composition. Although he could have toned it down just a little :)

Its funny that right after listening to that annoying song from "Stan Kenton Presents" this beautiful song followed it automatically on You Tube and is the extreme opposite playing from the trumpet:

I don't play, but a trumpet story a few might enjoy.

I discovered a friend in my alumni club played trumpet in the marching band while in school and continued to go back each fall for the alumni band reunions.

Now those of you who may be old time audio hobbyists should remember the name Robert Fulton of FMI (speaker and wire manufacturer).  It happened that Fulton had a band background and in fact had invented and produced a trumpet mouthpiece, aside from his audio products.

One day in casual conversation we touched on audio components and I ask my friend if he ever heard of Bob Fulton.  Not only did he know the name but he owned a Fulton mouthpiece.  He said he had tried several and only the Fulton produced the tone he wanted.

Here's another trumpeter who favored higher registers, initially in jazz with Woody Herman, then later (presumably to make more $) in rock -

Count Basie -- KANSAS CITY SHOUT
with / Joe Turner and Eddie ’Cleanhead’ Vinson vocals

Both Joe Turner and ’Cleanhead’ Vinson were way past their prime on this recording. Still better than most. Of course Basie was always in his prime. Vinson on Alto Sax also.

frogmanEnjoyed listening to your posts of different versions of "Caravan".   my Takeaway on each:1) Bigard band: most notable was how each player has a very distinctive Timbre and strives to produce a strong  sound Identifiable to that player.2) Abdullah Ibrahim`s.  variations on Caravan was excellent. It shows a different improvisational approach which was fresh and interesting. I have several of his recordings and he always seemed to take a different path than most other pianists.3) I enjoyed Tommy Flanagan's version the best. He stays close to the Bebop approach as always  a tasteful soloist.4)  the Ellington Roach Mingus version sounded like 3 Guys having an enjoyable jam session. Ellington retains the flavor of the tune.
There was another version of Caravan posted earlier by Jackie Terrason Although it was interesting I felt his need to pretty much deconstruct the song didn't add anything to it.

Killjoy? All this time and I thought that’s what the k in rok2id stood for 😊.
C’mon now, what exactly is inaccurate about what I wrote? It’s actually quite accurate. No need to get defensive about it; you like it, I don’t. Cheers.

The Frogman's inaccurate and vicious attack upon Maynard can be responded to with one word:    KILLJOY.

Cheers

Sure, for a reminder of how to not play the trumpet 😱.
Play as loud as possible with an obnoxious tone and as high as possible (affectionately referred to by players as “screech trumpet” playing); and do it all to an overproduced disco beat. What’s wrong with that? 🤪 I wonder what Wynton thinks?

Sorry, not my thing. Just kidding (kinda) because Maynard was a really good trumpet player in his prime before he found a niche with the overblown “big band on steroids” sound. He had incredibly strong chops and was legendary as a lead trumpet player. What happens to a player who plays that loud and that high for all those years is that he ends up being able to only play high and loud. Blows out the chops and loses the ability to play with any kind of finesse. Kind of what happens to a fast ball pitcher after throwing that hard for years.

Today's Listen:

Maynard Ferguson  --  CONQUISTADOR
 somewhere in this are:
George Benson, Randy Brecker, Joe Farrell, Patti Austin, Bob James, Jon Faddis, and a cast of thousands I don't know.

He doesn't just hit high notes, he plays entire tunes up there.

He designs his own trumpets.   This is the only recording I have ever heard that I thought was a live band playing.  I couldn't see the rig, just heard it from a distance outside.   Sony APM speakers and Phase Linear amps.

A must own for any Trumpet player.

Today's Listen:

Cannonball Adderley Sextet  --  LUGANO 1963

This was recorded in Lugano, Switzerland, of course.  The note writer, Norberto Gimelfarb, actually had the  audacity to take a swipe at Wynton.

"You can instantly tell what separates them: as far as I know, Cannonball only preached through his horn".

"But there are common features.  Cannonball carries in his approach the entire Jazz tradition as much as Marsalis does- or pretends to..."

Wow!!   I guess Wynton must have said or done something that irritated the 'Professor'.

So much for auslander critics.

Since I'm "ambidextrous", I can walk and chew gum at the same time, that makes me quite talented. (almost correct)

Like Fords and Chevies, we all are products of the factories that made us: urban, suburban, rich, not so rich; etc, you get my drift. Even in jazz there are a multitude of distinctions, and who knows what determines what we like best. I would like to carry those thoughts to the players.

Stanley Turrentine was born in Pittsburgh's Hill District into a musical family. His father, Thomas Turrentine, Sr., was a saxophonist with Al Cooper's Savoy Sultans, mother played stride piano, and his older brother Tommy Turrentine became a professional trumpet player.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Turrentine

He was born into a factory of musicians; that could explain why he has been so prolific in regard to his out put of good music.

Have a great trip, Schubert.  Been to Seoul twice.  Once in 1997 and then again three years ago.  The transformation of that city (and country) in twenty years was stunning.  Incredibly cosmopolitan and technologically advanced now.  I hope you find much to enjoy; I suspect you will.
@schubert

Have a good and safe trip to 'The Land of The Morning Calm'.

Cheers

Schubert, I will miss your very honest and "truthful" comments in regard to our state of affairs in these perilous times.

There are millions of people doing worse economically than at any time in this country in this old mans lifetime; while at the same time, if you want a new luxury yacht you will have to wait in line because yacht builders can't keep up with the demand.

Schubert, we came from a generation that cared for those who are less fortunate; not one that say's I got mine, you get yours the best way you can.

Pops got that right rok . Never heard him before .Will in future !

You won’t have to put up with me for few weeks . Delta finally got rid of their ancient 777-200’s on their non-stop from MSP to Seoul in favor of brand new Airbus 350-900 . I was one of the few who did a decade and a half
and never went to the ROK .I was on a draft once , but it was changed to 8th ID when they remembered the 8th ID over in Baumholder needed a few Pathfinders .. The 100 $ payment of a debt I forgot to a clerk friend up at Div. had nothing to do with it .

Bucket list .

.
The draft was ended because draftees ignored the "water walkers " and they could not, would not ,disciple them because of GOD efficiency report.Several then 0-1 and 2 are only walking around today because of me and they don’t even know it .
I’ve seen a lot of stuff from A’gan etc and discipline still leaves a lot to be desired . And I know what I am looking at ! SOS .

The drummer is 75 years old and still pounding away .I got a good chuckle .
Sax line is close to my favorite noise , Ron Carter and Gonzalo Rubalcaba with HIS .44 mag !

Benny Carter & Orchestra -- FURTHER DEFINITIONS

The liner notes are so tiny you would need a microscope to read them.  I did make out that this session reunited Carter and Hawkins once again, they had played Honeysuckle Rose in Paris in 1937!!!  That's 82 years ago folks.
Fairly decent Saxophone section.

The Dutchmen were good, but what's up with that drummer?  Got stuck in a time warp at Woodstock?

Btw,
The impetus for all Vietnam protests was the Draft.   Since the draft was ended, we have been almost at a constant state of war, with hardly a discouraging word from anyone.  I guess the protests were related to who was doing the fighting / dying.
Food for thought.

Cheers
Sorry for the interlude, as I've complained myself about non-jazz discussions.

Just to be clear schubert, I'm well aware what a foolish and unnecessary waste of lives and resources the Viet Nam war was.  No disagreement there at all.  But my point was about more than the patriotism exhibited in fall 1962 compared to the disillusionment and unrest four years later.  It was the change in social perspective and involvement over such a relatively short period of time.  It took a mistake as large as VN to do that.

Now, back to some music -

Yes , O-10 , but I wouldn’t call them pansies . Most who know what time it is
are aware that it is hopeless . I knew it then .I went back voluntary because I was a highly skilled Platoon Sgt. ,which the Army had few of,and knew I could save lives , both American and Vietnamese .

nsp, just Google D Scarlatti . He was/is one of the3-4 greatest key board composers who ever lived for starters .

Schubert, at that time we had citizens who would stand up to a corrupt lying government, now all we got is a bunch of pansies.
pjw I caught several of the Di Meola Cuts you posted both excellent. Reminded me lof  Return to Forever . From the 70s. Keyboard player and the drummer and percussionist were all excellent.
I was wondering if you had any thoughts or a favorite pick in next weekend's Canelo Alvarez vs kovalev fight?
acman3 thanks for the Chick Corea Trilogy vids.  these three guys have such a chemistry and  locked in when playing together. The cover of the album says it all with the  smiles on their faces.  this happened frequently at the concert with them smiling while playing together and it was obvious The Joy they have performing live. The classical compositions career performed whereby a composer named D Scarlatti, oh I never heard of. Maybe some of the classical listeners on this forum will know who he is.

I'm a Nam Era vet who never went to "Nam", but I had a friend who went, and we celebrated all night long when he came back in one piece.

Just like in "Apocalypse Now", he had to go back. When he returned for the last time, he was so messed up in the head that no one hardly knew him. I had to do some research in order to find out why, because every time he started telling me about things, he broke out in tears and was never able to finish.

My research revealed things too gruesome to repeat.
pyrso, Vietnam was a totally unnecessary war where 50,000+ Americans and several million innocent Asians died for no reason other than the one
President Eisenhower warned us about , the greed of the military-industrial complex .

Hardly a surprise that those in Universities caught on to this . Patriots see what is wrong and try to fix it , Militarists go the "my country right or wrong "
route which is the path to hell .

As soon as I left the Army in "68 I talked and ACT- ed my way into the
University of Minnesota though I had never gone to high-school and had
been in the Army since age 16.

First day of class I stood on the bridge over the Mississippi that joins the east and west of the campus and watched several thousands of students have
one hell of a uproar against the war . That was not my way , but I thought"good on you kids " .

schubert, I'm a Viet Nam era vet, but not a Viet Nam vet.  I saw much of that country via aerial photos but thankfully was never there.

I was in college for just over two years before joining the Navy.  That included being on campus the fall of 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  There was great patriotism on campus then with many talking of dropping out of school to join the military if necessary.  Compare that to the fall of 1966 when I returned to finish my degree, attitudes and society seemed to have changed completely.  When I started school the Student Veteran's Association was a respected group.  When I returned, even though some students wore military surplus fatigues, anything otherwise military was shunned.  The societal changes over that four years were so great it was stunning.
rok  , I have always been  doubtful about what the guys got upon return.
I came back twice , once to Fort Lewis and once to San Francisco .Went back to Syracuse on commercial  Airlines , once  from SF  and once from SETAC  With change both times at JFK .Walked though streets and airports for many hours in my uniform with the
13 medals and 3 unit  honors I rated .NOBODY gave me  even a glance , much less any insult .
I got indifference, which was OK by me . In war there are no good guys .
Jacky Terrasson:

@schubert  I have two by him.   His first two recordings on Blue Note.   Back then he was considered the future of Jazz.

Hard to think it's the same pianist.

The drummer on caravan was on fire.  It was something to see,  I think it could have used a little more 'Caravan".   Same with Besame Mucho, but, it's Modern day Jazz.   The young folks are happy.

Help, I'm stuck in the 60's and can't get out!!

Thanks for the clips.

nsp,

Regretfully I could not make it. I’m sure you had a great time. That band is full of top notch players. I recently posted some clips of Chick’s old bandmate from RTF, Al Di Meola (upthread same page). 2 hours is a long set which is always a good thing!

Glad you enjoyed it, nsp.  I’m not surprised it was a great show; fantastic players.  Congrats!
pjwDid you go to the Chick Corea concert last night?  I had great seats  8th row orchestra . His working band ( Christian McBride, Brian Blades)Played about 2 hours total, including an encore.
3 Monk tunes, 2 standards, several Corea original tunes, and several classical pieces.
The sound was excellent and the bands playing and interaction were top notch as expected.
They have a new double cd , titled Trilogy 2 . Have to buy it Their first cd was a triple cd set, i will post something when i have time.

rok, , that Brize Norton went so fast that when the guys jumped I involuntary went forward as if to "stand up" .Love to see the greatest military thing ever , the AC-130 . Must be, a "Puff" saved me and my 229th Pathfinder Det.
The 229th AHB , "Winged Assault", was the most decorated unit in the Vietnam War .
Today's Listen:

Walter Davis Jr -- DAVIS CUP

Davis' debut as leader.  All tunes written by Davis.   And, as the notes point out, these are 'real' originals, not lifted from another genre.  Apparently he was very promising back in the day as a composer, his name being mentioned in the same sentence  with Ellington, Monk, John Lewis and Jelly Roll Morton.  I am not sure his career lived up to the promise.
