Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Humor jazz or clown jazz.. I bet it's really new here so enjoy some laughs!

I'm now enjoying George Benson's White Rabbit on original CTI. That's killer! Got it for $1 at rescue mission M- record and jacket.
Looks like true frogman...
Did you check Ravi Coltrane's work? He's more like his dad!
Frogman, you've touched my 'weak spot' which is ECM and which is most of my jazz collection. ECM mostly records innovative and creative musicians, but vast portion of my heart leans towards Carla Bley that mostly appears on WATT label which is again part of ECM. Almost all of my personal records of Carla Bley have her signature taken during her live performances
acman31,286 posts11-04-2016 8:14amI have never been to a whore house, but I am pretty sure they don't play Jazz or Blues.
Did you ever had sex and played "Highway to Hell"? LOL, You might be a red neck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYw4aItvb4w

Richard Galliano is famous and probably would have gazillion tube videos with various musicians and he's great -- just as great or better than Frank Marocco or Art Van Damme.

I enjoy accordion jazz would certainly add young and less known Ludovic Beier

Is this post mainly for night time cozy jazz or some other more “bad” flavors can be added?

I was surprised that no one mentioned here Gypsy Jazz artists Certainly starting from Django Reinhardt, but today's lineup of such is also impressive such as Bireli Lagrene, Angelo DeBarre, Stochelo Rosenberg (Rosenberg trio), Jimmy Rosenberg and finally the universal player classical/jazz Antoine Boyer.

Angelo DeBarre, I think is the closest to the style of Django. Enjoy this B&W video so he indeed would seem like the one!

Can dark jazz "shine" this discussions a-bit?

I've recently started diggin there:

Bohren & der Club of Gore

Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble

Manet!!
