ILLINOIS JACQUET Birthday Party Vol. 2

I have this vinyl album and absolutely love it, however during the last song on side two - "Polka Dots & Moon Beams"  I have a loud distortion that comes thru for just about a second or two.  I'm thinking it is a pressing defect.

I'm wondering if any of you have this vinyl record and experience the same thing?  I have cleaned it very thoroughly with my VPI record cleaning and it is still there.  So I just refuse to play that side of the album as I do not want to take a chance of damaging my stylus or my equipment and speakers.

I don't know if it is worth it for me to try and find another copy of this album, or if they all have this defect?

I'm hoping some of you will be able to share some of your thoughts or experiences with me.

Thank you and best wishes,

Don

Hi Frogman!

I’m at work right now, so I can’t play it at the moment, but if I recall l correctly it is the sax playing at that moment.  I don’t think that it’s my cartridge mistracking.  I realize it can happen more often near the end of an album but I don’t think that is it.
I’ll try and link a YouTube of the song when I’m not in meetings.

Best wishes,

Don

Don’t know that recording and no luck on the Tube.  So, can you describe what exactly is happening musically at the precise moment that you hear the distortion?  What instrument(s) are playing?  Is the piano (?) playing a particularly percussive note or chord at that precise moment?

Hi Jason,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my thread :)

The distortion only happens about 1/2 or 3/4 of the way thru the last song on side two. The rest of the entire album is completely quiet and plays mint.

The distortion is very loud when it happens. It literally makes me jump up from my listening chair. Again, thankfully it only lasts 1 or 2 seconds. I'm fearful however of that loud transient distorted burst damaging my speakers and wasn't sure if it could also damage my stylus if it is indeed some kind of pressing defect.  The distortion comes thru both speakers.

It is a Groove Note reissue on 180gr vinyl that I bought from Acoustic Sounds. The album is recorded very well, with great music and musicians, and plays quiet all the way through both sides with only that one exception.

Best wishes,

Don

So your stylus sails through this pressing defect? No problem then about damaging the stylus or blowing up your amp!

A second or two of distortion near the end of side two! Surely you can live with it! Is this an original pressing or reissue?
