These little squint-and-poke displays are a symptom of "feature packing" that happens on everything from cell phones to cars. In the fifties, it was fins and chrome. That was followed by "more bright colored lights and controls". More automatic stuff. Complex user interfaces with options in deep menus.
What happened to "form follows function" and "ornament and crime". Those ideas speak to utility and minimalism.
