To assure 'better sound' your design efforts should include consideration of acoustic shields, of all kinds. Remember, when the speakers are playing, acoustic energy is flying around your room and impacts every surface it can find. Especially important to shield the turntable/arm, as that component is significantly distorted by acoustic energy hitting it. Lastly, and I got this idea from acoustic improvements that were made to my church, attach acoustic foam to the undersides of each shelve that will have a component below it. This cuts the reflectivity of sound in the cavity of the shelve. Enjoy. Do post pictures of your finished product.
Help with equipment rack design
I'm pondering building a rack for my components. It will be hardwood, furniture quality, I hope, flattering the room. Generally, I'm thinking single-bay width, and shelving for, say, five components. So, I'd estimate a couple feet wide, maybe less, and four feet tall, maybe less.
