I believe Dunlavy always recommended long wall placement so speakers could be placed wide apart while keeping them a good distance from side walls.
The problem with this as I saw it was unless the room was larger than average that could place the listener's head close to the back wall. In my experience it is best to place both the speakers and listening seat(s) away from walls.
I know John loved bass (he played acoustic string bass) but the listener's head too close to the rear wall couples bass, rendering less definition.
I enjoyed Duntech Princess model for 19 years. Best I ever heard Duntechs or DAL models was a friend's Princesses in a 20 x 18 room with an alcove at the rear. That allowed great separation between speakers, away from side walls, with the listening seat well into the room.
