thank you all for your comments and ideas. And the info about Amir and Tekton's squabble. It puts things in perspective for me. You guys may have saved me a great deal of heartache and trouble.
Has anyone here had any dealings with Tekton, particularly their subwoofers
As I explore options for replacing equipment I am it seems constantly finding new sources of components to consider. Tekton has appeared on my radar due to another thread here at audiogon. I just wondered if anyone has gone this direction for subwoofers in particular, but I also have questions about their full range speakers and what they are like to deal with. Given that the world of hi-fi has become even more of a smoke and mirrors game than it has been in the past, I am more cautious about who I am willing to throw down money for than I ever have been.

@jayctoy Hey thanks for that Jay. I have read this entire thread and considered advice given by those that were kind enough to respond to my questions. I also spent quite a bit of time on Tekton's website looking at their various models and my sense of their product line, after reading responses here and looking at their offerings, is that their real forte, pardon the pun, is LOUDspeakers, with an emphasis on high efficiency much more than wide bandwidth. Not saying that is wrong, as there are certainly benefits to that approach, but it doesn't line up for me as the right place to draw the line for home audio speakers. Granted this is my opinion and for those that draw the line that represents the trade-off between bandwidth and efficiency in a different place, that's fine, there is room in this pursuit of great sound for as many different approaches as there are people on the planet. I prefer to trade some efficiency for bandwidth, knowing that the extra cost in amplifier power to make up the difference is the price paid for that choice. Since the system I am ultimately building must serve dual purpose, that is, movie/tv and music too, even with full range speakers for LF and RF, I will still want/need a subwoofer or two or more for LFE while watching movies. That said, I was attracted to tekton's subs due to their high efficiency until one person's comment indicated there was not much output below 30 Hz. I am looking for real serious infra-sonic output and support for a true full range system. I am giving serious consideration to SVS's new 17" sub as the answer for that. It certainly gets rave reviews and if its a step up (as it seems to be) from their very good PC2000 Pros then I am likely all in. Other considerations are PSA 18" or 21 IPAL and monoprice. I have some time before this decision needs to be made but giving it serious thought beforehand seems prudent. Any thoughts on subs with serious infransonic output? |
@2psyop Your comment about me is unappreciated and inaccurate. Please resist the urge to criticize others in a direct personal way until you know them well enough that it won't be perceived as slanderous. My negative comments were based on appearance only...and were intended to be funny. In no way was I impugning the sound quality as I have never had the experience of hearing them in person. They LOOK different enough from conventional designs to poke fun at, but it certainly wasn't malicious. Your assumption that it was is both wrong and insulting. |
@deep_333 Thanks for the link for the rythmik F18 sub that looks like a solid possibility. A pair of those should do a decent job of energizing my theater room. Certainly gonna put those on the list. The ascendos, if you look at the specs are 15 db down at 30 Hz, so they wouldnt be on my list. @devinplombier The lack of distribution in the US is a non starter for me...there are enough things to juggle to try to get a house back in livable condition that taking on the hassle of trying to get something shipped from across the pond kills that as an acceptable situation. @mark200mph - my dad was a physicist too :) and I agree that we should just enjoy the music. God knows there is enough good music to listen to I will never hear it all. |
@moonwatcher I can't speak to whether Eric is high strung or not, he and I exchanged an email or two and he seemed normal enough in that limited contact. @jayctoy I have seen other favorable comments about Rel so they are definitely worth checking out. Thank you for the info.
