yes once i buy the Sony , et all upgrade kits they are no longer "budget speakers" but can " out do " some $1k speakers! ! arguably ( as per Andrew Robinson they are a waste of $ =he says" parts don’t matter " and is wrong ! they do !
yes many cheapo speakers do not even HAVE a crossover ! the yamaha ( many models ) have ONLY a small cap on tweeter and Mid and are run as full range !
so even a cheap x -over is better than none at all!
i bought a bunch of cheap ali express x -overs and am sending them to Danny !
we are fixing the cheapo Yamaha NS6490 as sort of a proletariat project ! they sold MILLIONS of these 3 way ( $150 pair ? ) all over the world and some guys in the poor countries are stuck w/ them ! so a slight bit better would be greatly appreciated esp if it can be
done for third-world income prices !
gr research some MORE of my projects and experience w/ them part 2

So the lesson I have learned is we are NOT done yet w/ our speakers !
we have our speaker systems and they CAN be ( most of them ) be made markedly better / improved w/ mods to the crossover , connectors the box or ?
IF you want to .
There are some clever audio engineers who have done or will do it . some of them you can send them speakers ( ask first ) and they will test them FREE , show you the graphs, tests and they can make a better crossover , etc. -( if they CAN be improved
Some it is not worth trying -hey a few speakers , very few, ARE good to begin w/ !
Others ? it would be like putting lipstick on a pig !
And ? yes maybe you will end up spending so much you could get the / some more expensive "better " speakers . OK
but then THOSE probably are not optimum either ! LOL
I own several good, really good vintage speakers Yamaha , some Vandersteen 2 ce , Allison acoustics AL130 , etc . and as time and finances permit ,( I’m mostly retired on SS ) i will pay the shipping both ways and send them for testing ! some will be left as is some will be fixed , modded !
Seems many / most of the speaker makers cheap out ,cut corners , build to a price point and compromise .

there are two REALLY good re-do’s for the venerable Yamaha NS1000M speakers !
GR research can for next level, upgrade the speakers w/his crossover kit or Troels Gravesen has a crossover upgrade kit for that model Yamaha NS1000M as well ( posted 6 yrs ago )
He did like them and noted an upgrade brings them up to compete with modern loudspeakers,
that’s saying something coming from a loudspeaker designer. & Audio engineer!
well he’s like Danny he’s into making money The upgrades are a LOT $ of money !
they both charge almost $1,000 for the crossover kits ( for 2 speakers )
I thought it was kind of quaint Mr Graves uses felt, or was it wool for material to control resonance.
I pointed out Danny uses something called No rez which is a little more high-tech.( like HUGELY better! ) !
If I had a spare $2,000 I’d buy both kits do one speaker with one do one speaker with the other then A-B test them and then do both / ALL speakers what was best.! ( or which you prefer )
If you get a kit from Mr. Gravesen do a speaker and ( I HOPE ! ) send it to Danny for testing he can test it against one of his maybe LOL.
BTW I REALLY like his ( Mr Gravesen’s ) design for a center channel speaker ! it is impressive ! ( but another topic and NOT vintage heck there were NO center channel back in the day ! )
Hi! Have you sent A Yamaha NS 1000mm to Gr research yet ?
well, you do not need to !
3 months ago he did the NS1000M ( on YouTube ) you may be familiar with it ? if not watch it !
i’m all in favor of upgrading fine classics to 21 st century ! they CAN be better!
IF you want to !
most interested to read this most folks would not just fork out the $ and say build them! they will DIY fr plans , or easy flat pack kits but it was right for you so why not ?
for a good review of your speakers and the other similar model i can suggest folks listen to, watch these videos ! they will answer most of the questions , concerns folks have besides they are interesting !

oK FOLKS HERE HOW THEY CAN BE FIXED !the sony tower Sony SS-CS3 3
Danny, GR research said : " We’ve done that upgrade on the Sony tower Sony SS-CS3 3 and look forward to getting it back to you. "
here are the results AFTER it’s fixed !
the sony tower Sony SS-CS3 3
Impedance: Fairly balanced other than the dip in the lower midrange down, to 2.67ohms in the lower midrange.
the sony tower Sony SS-CS3 3
Spectral Decay: Much cleaner decay overall, but still a bit messy, should clean up with NoRez and some additional stuffing
the sony tower Sony SS-CS3 3
Vertical Axis: they get a fairly proud around 3Khz as you move up above the tweeter, but still fairly smooth overall.
the sony tower Sony SS-CS3 3
Horizontal Axis: still very smooth.
the sony tower Sony SS-CS3 3
read and weep
"We did Design something for the SSCS3 that worked out pretty well, but the main issue is that the impedance unfortunately drops to ~2.7 ohms at ~350Hz, which will make them quite hard to drive, and can make some amps run hot or cause them to become unstable.
Here are the new measurements: (old measurements in the attachments)
OnAxis+ crossover: Much smoother response than stock."
next crazy project (and a bit more difficult ) is to take one of the Sony SS-CS3 3 towers take off the little base and turn it horizontal and make it a upgraded center channel! we will reconfigure the speakers to a ideal center channel W-T/M -W configuration! the stock c enter channel is only W-t-W a lame 2 way!
Danny already has a kit for the Sony SS-CS5 book shelf makes it one of the "as good as $1k speaker " LOL
my challenge to him was well do the tower please ! ( above ) so, well DONE now ! yes pricy essentially the supertweeter becomes the tweeter and the tweeter becomes very nice dome midrange ! it woks and sounds fantastic thank you !
and i have a heap of these as i am doing the 11.1 system of the SONY SS-CS series !
HI folks confuse the tiny NS1000MM mini monitor ) w/ the BIG old classic vintage NS1000M which are quite good esp if you buy and fit the x -over kits fr GR research or trolls graveson ( sp ? ) -they cost like $1k which is about what a good used pair of the speakers go for in USA ! LOL

seeking Allison AL series ! vintage speakers esp AL130 , AL125
have the crazy notion to use allison as my HT speakers !
what do i do for a center channel ?
it really needs to be the BEST speaker all of them for HT and most ARE NOT!
we almost need to MAKE one using Allison drivers and HOW can i do that so it honors Roy allison’s genius ? ( And works ! )…

i just scored a pair of used AL115 for $200 fr the original owner! they arrived today!
scored another pair of AL115 locally for $100 !
Recently scored a pair of good-condition Allison AL115 speakers fr CL ad for $100 !
hi well i got a Ben Q trevolo powered elctrostatic speaker am trying for a HT , TV center channel speaker
wowo it has amazing clear vocals ! very real !
i guess like you would expect of this type
but even w/ it’s two 4" woofers and two passive radiators the bass is weak It needs a sub !
So,have been using a Yamaha YMST 55D for the center channel for years it has a 6" woofer and two 2 way satellites i run it in mono of course .
tried using them BOTH at the same time and that actually is pretty good!
so I found a pretty good unusual fix for a center channel I’m using a ben q trevolo tiny electrostatic speaker in mono and an old Yamaha
YMST-55D computer speaker that has an 6 inch sub and two two-way satellites.
I’ve been trying to find speakers all in the same Sonic family enough to have a 7.1 Yamaha system for example the little NS100MM i sent to Danny @ GR research
and the drivers ARE little ! NS1000MM These are even smaller than I expected. !
Way too small to do any real sort of upgrades with. Looks like a 1/2" metal super tweeter with a 1" silk dome as a "mid" and a 4" woofer.
so not good enough for back, surround , side etc He says ":The size alone will make it really difficult to upgrade in any meaningful sense without a large external crossover. I’d probably just keep these as is, unless you really want to upgrade them."
about all i can think to do w/ them is use them to replace the 2 satellites of the YST-MS55D the drivers of the satellites now are only 3" woof & 3/4 " tweeter so the 3 ways of the NS1000MM should be an upgrade (and i have to do SOMETHING w/ the POS speakers ! )
ck out the horrible specs of the little 3 way NS1000MM !
( there are heaps of them for sale on e bay now about $200 a pair !
