Good turntable needed, need recomendations.
I am not a vinyl guy but want to become one I have a pair of Vandersteen Sevens coming in and want a source to match. With speaking with my dealer he recommended a Basis turntable. Everything I read states they are good and the vacuum system is the way to go. This puts me into a 20K table though. I am thinking that is just too much money for what I see there.
My problem also is that although the basis tables look nice they all looks like a 3K table, unless you go to the insane models.
So I really think 15K on the top end is my budget I rather be around 10k. But really want something I will like to look at as well.
Part of my issue is being an amateur machinist and a wood worker a piece of cnc plexi glass for thousands of dollars just doesn’t excite me.
Any recommendations, or is the Basis the way to go, thanks in advance for you input.

While I prefer vinyl to cd for it basic sound considerations, I think I enjoy using and looking at a turntable more than a cd player. Just sticking in a cd and pushing play is something akin to making toast. there just isnt any personality to it and a cd player has become an appliance. I will probably make the jump to hard disk music on a computer before going to cd. I havent listened to a commercial cd in more than 10 years, but I do record my vinyl on to cd to copy to my Ipod. With Apple lossless quality, it isnt bad. If Apple ever allows hi rez downloads, I might be on board and download my favorite vinyl albums. but I just enjoy the ritual of playing vinyl on an interesting, high end turntable. And because of that, it probably sounds better to me. |
Thanks for all the input. Still have not got anything cost, confusion and set up are delaying me. My dealer was over tuning my sevens and he recommended putting the player in another room, this works well with my set up but unexciting since I won't be able to see it. He also likes the new entry level clear audio tables and a hrs shlef. Funny thing is the hrs stand is as much as the player. Still totally confused and no good sources bought a wadi a s7i and has had nothing but trouble freezing up so now my digital is also down and I am loosing wife acceptance factor and pacients really fast. Best thing is I find a nice used basis it sounds like I don't trust entry level clear audio tables from what I have read but that may be totally wrong. |
At your budget, you would be really hard-pressed to beat the DPS Ayre turntable. It's right at your price point, and I've heard it in the same context as the $30K SME 'table, and it sounds like it's in the same league. You don't have to spend a lot of money on an isolation platform for this one because DPS's constrained layer damping is so effectively enginnered. This is a very linear, very musically involving turntable with rock-steady speed thanks to Ayre's contribution of power supply and speed controller. The tonearm DPS designed for this table is very impressive, and it totally kicks butt with a Lyra Helikon or Skala cartridge. |
