God doesn't need to know what time it is.

Value of anything is a most fascinating subject to me.

Eric Clapton hasn't owned this  Rolex Daytona for nearly 20 years. It 's probably been in storage since he dumped it and is expected to fetch north of $1.6M?

For that much I'd want his playing ability AND his stereo system.

Mahgister-

Ostad Elahi is new to me. First thing that comes to mind- "steam of consciousness" listening.

Great story bdp24.

Yes to Danny Gatton. I play an early 90's Antholgy 2 CD now and then. Storied player.

The 50's country, R/R and fringe Tele players up to the Beck/Page era are the ones who really made the Tele otherworldly. Big respect to all the Telecaster players.

The Telecaster is the Timex of Electric Guitars? I made a note to follow up on the Clapton Daytona, which goes to bid in May.

Really curious if bidding  reaches anticipated value. That  is a comfortable retirement IRA amount!

The watch collectors  here may be familiar with this guys YoutTube watch channel here .He shows some watches to his SoCal   real estate/car collector.

Wonder if these guy even have a stereo in their home? They don't strike my as music fans for some reason.

Anyone who is a guitar player  or plays an instrument should be laughing at some of these post.

It's funny   how "cultural appropriation" is a popular thing to squeeze into threads.

It's just a thread about the "value" of  EC Rolex.

"But that's one of the pitfalls of civilians talking about music."

secretguy- I think some people compare musicians like sports figures?

bdp24- Albert Lee is in otherworldly club of guitarists.

He always shows something in his playing that is mind blowing-at least to me.

I also vote Vince Gill as a heck of a player. He can pull off some Telecaster  hot rodding when he wants to.

The players who kill on Tele's are in a class I dream of being in. A very special(but really a low tech piece of wood) guitar. It's all about who's got their hands' around that maple neck and slab of ash.

I would put Red Volkaert as a member of my Tele team.

"You guys are aware he is a culturally-appropriating, virulent racist, right?"

tylermunns-

No need for "woke" commentary. There are plenty of forums for that.

Bdp24-

Now and then I wonder  just how ridiculous my spending would be if I were in that league-01%?

Sure would love to wrap my hands around a few classics normally unobtanium to mere mortals. The drum kit you have certainly is of more "value" to me and I don't play!

I appreciate fine timepieces, wouldn't  object to having even a " budget" Rolex, but not my thing.

One LP, Strat and a beat up Deluxe Reverb keep me occupied.

Secretguy-what a silly comment.  How's  YOUR music career going?

"The Deluxe Reverb (blackface, of course ;-), my favorite amp. "

bddp24-Yes, I don't have the "real deal" but  a1994 2nd year reissue(circuit board but ALL tube) Not a Fullerton Ca. "original. 22 watts of power able to keep up with most any heavy handed drummer and overly loud bass player.

I think it's safe to say -EVERYONE who has ever  listened to R&R, Country, Pop, Jazz and everything in between  particularly 60-80's recordings, has heard a Fender DR!

THE MOST used studio amp there ever was? All the greats likely plugged into one at some point.

"A watch is a distraction for working fools... 😁😊"

mahgister-

I think there is some truth to that! I look forward to not being concerned with "being on time."

"Ralph dug back into his classical guitar training to come up with something the Devil’s guy couldn’t best."

tomcy6-

Ralph is a good actor. He was able to learn  how to ape the fingering on the fretboard and move his strumming hand in a convincing way to the  audience.

He was instructed by a player-Arlon Roth.to play an "advanced "style of air guitar while holding the guitar. I had an instructional video on VHS with Arlon in the late 80's. Click on the "Crossroads" for fun facts.

"I had a Blackface deluxe and a blackface vibrolux at the same time and enjoyed them both. Eventually I got frustrated with the finnicky nature of vintage amps but they sounded wonderful"

stuartk-

Yeah, they're noisy idling, the pots eventually get scratchy, and the tone conrols don't really do much-but once you plug in- the sound. I plug  in a tubed stomp box for  pseudo Marshall stack tones.

whart- I've always admired the Submariner. Classic looks. Cool made cooler since it was the choice of Steve McQueen. I totally get the watch collector thing. It's a "hobby" reserved for someone with Tech Das Air Force One play money.

Great story isochronism.

It raises an important question...

Just who would I pick, If I could choose any of the greats for a one on one?

"Wristwatches were made so one would not need to to reach into their pocket for the time. Now it has come full circle where people reach back into their pocket."

That is one of the reasons I wear a watch. I just don't  have the wrist or wallet to wear a cool one as the Submariner or Daytona!

"the rhythm section is so soul-less and robotic, they needn't have used real musicians."

stuartk-

I think you described the overall vibe of the album. Music for the sake of music- in background while doing chores in the house.

Guitarists  for Miles in pecking order John McLaughlin, John Scofield with, Mike Stern/Robben Ford a toss up.

asctim-

If it were me, unless it’s a ridiculous price, something like that IS worth restoring.

I never get tired of watching this guys restorations. This one is minor to other projects posted on YT. Fascinating skill/trade

"The problem with EC's playing from my perspective is I always seem to know which note comes next which for me makes him boring."

mijostyn-

I believe your intuition is reinforcing music harmony theory /science-why a  certain note just sounds "right" to our hearing.  Science and subjectivity that always gives me "wow" moments when I read the subject.

Eric's solo's  often does follow specific  scales/patterns any good guitarist has in his solo arsenal. How one puts it all together in any setting is the tough part.

tomcy6-

Ralph had one heck of learning experience-

Too bad Ralph didn't have the drive to stay with the guitar. He possibly could have developed into a decent player.

Lessons equal to that would cost a fortune! His posture was pretty convincing in some of those some of the scenes. Fun movie

I actually saw Son Thomas play at The Tucson Blues Festival some years ago.  He was great.  The power, not volume, power, coming off that stage produced by one man with an acoustic guitar was incredible."

That is the sign of a good player. Holding an audience captive with just an acoustic is a gift.

" You could have Clapton’s playing ability if you just bought a guitar and practiced with marginal diligence.  I would guess the average person hits Clapton-level ability after about a year from starting from scratch.

There’s nothing special about his playing.  As basic as it gets."

SIGH...

Knows it all, predictable remarks, always the new  member with the comments.

Has to be the agitator-grow up.

Find another sandbox to play in.

"As talented as he is, I have to admit I have mixed feelings about his playing. I take very seriously the notion of the musician’s priorities as being in service to first the song, second the singer, third the ensemble, and lastly his instrument. I’m not sure Brad sees things that way."

bdp24-

IMO Brad is more of an "entertainer" that happens to play guitar.

"I saw Robben on the Tiger Walk tour and enjoyed that material very much. "

stuartk- I bought the CD when it was released. Still play it now and then. While I do like the album, wasn’t compelled to listen to his other work.

bdp24- another internet discovery for me.

The watch guy in the YT was a drummer and music industry exec.

Michael Blakey. It appears he is the YT high rolling lifestyle guy and an actual former musician.

mahgister-

You’re probably know Pat Martino had an incredible comeback story after losing his memory/playing ability. He overcame major challenges.
