Girlfriends and wifes, how do YOU cope?

I would be very interested in finding out how one manages to justify (or sneak in the home) expensive audio equipment without having to sell your soul to the Devil? It's quite a challenge for many of us I think. I heard of someone buying a Bel Canto DAC and telling his girlfriend that " Oh it's just a $ 100.00 power conditionner", or whatever. Seem like we need to get creative here if we can pursue this crazy hobby much longer! Regards All...

She doesn't ask, and I don't tell. We've been married for over 17 years. When we dated and lived together (gasp) she knew I was a 'audio nut', her words. Since I'm the bread winner, she doesn't bother me much. When the UPS truck pulls up, she just e-mails me at work and says "what did we get now?" I explain the new toy, but never discuss pricing. That's on a need to know basis, and she don't need to know. She'd probably flip if she knew I was spending what I spend. She can look at a $5000 amp, and really believe it only cost $200. Precious, ain't it. What they don't know, don't hurt them. You guys that share your hobbies with your wives are very lucky. Mine still thinks I'm nuts, everything sounds the same to her. I don't care for her taste in music either. Oh well, that's life.
I don't think so Pete. Sure it starts out with Willie and Bonnie, and the next thing I know you'll be recommending Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Pavoratti... :)

Cheers,
John
Joeylawn36111, just out of curiousity, where do you live that it's so hard to find a woman? Are your tastes exquisitely high? Or do you live in Timbuktoo?

Raytheprinter, buy all the stuff you want now, and stay single. You'll have the best of both worlds. Remember love is grand, but divorce is 100 grand. :-)

Cheers,
John
Damn Greg, that's harsh! You're not bitter by any chance, are you?

Don't hold back now, tell us how you really feel about marriage. :)

Soulgoober, I understand completely. The answer for me was to change my working hours so they differ from hers. I still see her, but not as much, and I have more time with the music while she's at work. This may not work for everyone, but I'm happy. :)

Cheers,
John

Women 'love' music and being 'with' their man. Play em something they like.

True, but they love different kind of music. When my wife and I were dating, about 25 years ago, she always commented on how similar our musical tastes were. Both of our tastes have changed over the years....in different directions. She's all Country now. I like Jazz, Blues, Rock and Classical. I'm not a fan of Country, Rap or Opera.
I can listen to her Country on the car stereo or her boombox, but please, not on the big rig!

A good system is a panty remover, lots of young guys know it.

Yes, but this is because they are with young ladies who are trying to please their man in order to get themselves a wedding ring. Once they have their ring, the man no longer has 'hand', as they say on Seinfeld. A good system is not a panty remover for a 'mature' woman...believe me.

John
......And now for something completely different....a man with a tape recorder up his nose...

When I got into audio, I cut back on my excessive drinking, hard drug use, gambling, womanizing, reckless driving, and pee-ing all over the toilet. It was a pretty good trade-off all in all to her.

Heck, I can't give up all that fun. I even do all of that stuff with my audio gear. Sure, my wife thinks that me 'peeing all over my speakers' is disgusting, but a man's gotta mark his territory, don't he??

Stereolady....you seem like a woman whose mind is guided by common sense....I've not dealt with this in your gender before.....it's very refreshing, to say the least. Not surprising that you wound up at AudiogoN.

Cheers,
John
I would not say my wife minds too much, but I wouldn't say that she enjoys it either. If pushed, she will admit that my system sounds better than her radio, however, it's not nearly worth the price paid in her opinion. She thinks spending mega-K's on an audio system that sounds slightly better than a $200 boombox is just ridiculous......I can't really say that she is wrong. We have bigger disagreements with musical tastes....she's not fond of mine, and I feel the same way about hers.

I know folks who spend millions of dollars on cars, boats, travel, etc, which never made sense to me, so I can understand how one does not comprehend how someone can spend seemingly excessive money on an obssession. There are many obssessions out there that claim a lot of money, audio gear, home theater, cars, boats, women, golf, travel, etc, etc. Each individual person has different values of what they are willing to spend on one specific obsession. Some are fortunate enough to be able to spend excessively on ALL obssessions in life......sigh.
