Equalizer in a Hi Fi system

Just curious to hear everyone’s opinions on using an equalizer in a high end hi fi system. Was at work tonight and killing time and came across a Schitt Loki max $1500 Equalizer with some very good reviews. What are some of the pros / Benefits and cons in using one. Just curious. BTW. I’m talking about a top of the line. Hi end equalizer. Mostly to calm some high frequencies and some bad recordings.

@sudnh I second that respectfully that u are also totally wrong. Check out my system and tell me if it’s anything less than a hi end audio system.

@tlcocks U know I was seriously gonna look into the PEQ 1. But from what u mentioned about to stay away from the newer units and to only look for the older models definitely makes me feel different now about that. What is your sense of posting great reviews of that if now they are the older models only and probably very hard to find. I’ll stick to the Schitt Max and will have a remote that way I don’t have to keep getting up or down from my ez chair. Huge feature for me to have. ( remote with EQ +1.

@wolf_garcia @tlcocks I was reading and looking at videos of the the Mcintosh MQ112 and really do like it very much. I’m very interested in this now. Not too bad for 3k. Looks very simple to use also. And it is 8 bands as of 6 for the Max.  It came out this last month also I believe. I’d really like to demo it if that possible before I make the purchase.Does anyone know more about this ? Also it looks like it’s a much better made / high end gear  unit also than the Max. Well after all it is Mcintosh. This will be my first ever Mc if I get it. Wish it had a remote thought. Can’t have everything I guess.

Update >.Just made an appointment with my local McIntosh dealer to audition the MQ112 tomorrow morning at 9 am and they also have 1 last one in stock and there are apts all day and Friday for demos booked to hear the MQ112. So if I do like what I see and hear I’ll be bringing it home.

@mirolab   I definitely will update as I really on figuring I will be really liking the McIntosh MQ112. Also I really do like this feature that it has. It’s has a tilt knob. What is does is works at the centered frequency point. When turned counterclockwise the tilt control works by boosting all the frequencies below the tilt frequency ( Bass signals). While attenuating all signals about the tilt frequency ( treble signals ). When turned clockwise the tilt control boosts all frequencies above the tilt frequency and attenuates all frequencies below the tilt frequency. So sometimes u just use the tilt to hear and have those changes without touching any other frequency knobs. There is a great video on utube about an hour long on this unit. Very detailed and discussed by a McIntosh owner and from a McIntosh dealer that I am goin to see tomorrow morning and most likely purchase it.Really looking forward to demo this.

I am really looking forward to hearing this MQ112 along with purchasing it tomorrow. I have also been reading about and watching videos on the McIntosh MEN220 Room Correction System. It’s very interesting and maybe one of my next and final purchases to bring out the best of my room and system. BTW. My system is in my profile if anyone is interested in what I have.

Also even though I have never owned any McIntosh gear I have no doubt that they are are high quality built unit. Seems to be a much better quality than the Schitt Max. And I’m sure it will out live it also. And will fit nicely with my Audio Research Ref system. The Schitt Max looks like more of something someone would put in a midfi system or use with headphones. Not knocking that or the Schitt Max at all but all in all I believe the MAC will win the place in my High end system.

Just came back from my MAC dealer. I demoed the MQ112. Was Very impressed. I purchased it. I’ll be hooking it up later today and be back with my review within my system.

Well it’s been a full day of listening to my system with my new McIntosh MQ112 and I have to say I ABSOLUTELY love it. This is exactly what I was missing and needed for myself. As I said for myself and my listening and hearing tastes in sound. Every time I play CDs I find myself saying what a difference in sound quality in some recording that were too high in frequencies that now I can simply adjust with a knob. Even great recordings can sound even better. What I also really love is that TILT feature knob. It’s a quick fix without even adjusting any other frequency knobs. Plus then if u want and need to can fine tweak the tilt knob with the other 8 band frequencies. I also find myself not getting up and down as often as I thought without a remote but many times once I have adjusted some frequency it is very good for many CDs or recordings. I have to say I give this MQ112 a big thumbs up 👍. It’s also a very nice addition in my system. I also added new photos and updates on my system profile. Check ‘em out.

@tlcocks What do u mean how is the 10k treble band. It’s excellent. I wouldn’t want to go any higher with another frequency knob. It’s more than enough. I usually back it off also.

@kykat I posted my review Please go back to the page before this I believe. Quick reply >. I love the MQ112

@tlcocks   Yes I do usually increase the 10k I meant to say that with the recording I’ve listened to many had to be cut due to high frequency in the recording. But a very good recording I do increase the 10k. I too love good bass and good treble but not bright. This certainly does it job well.

@tlcocks Yes I am still loving the MQ112. It is the best accessory that I could have bought to do exactly as it is supposed to do. And I love the looks and quality of it also to blend into my existing ARC components.

@pooch2 I would have bought the Schiit Loki max if I didn’t hear about the McIntosh Q112. I am very happy with it but it woulda been nice to have a remote.

@pooch2 Thats the way I feel about the Mac MQ112. It’s very simple to use and I love the way it fits into my system.

@scottwheel. I feel the same way. I also feel that is DOES NOT degrade my system in any way. Actually I feel it ADDS more to it in every way.

@mbmi I too have the MQ112 for about 2.5 weeks now and absolutely love it. I would love to know your impression with it when the time comes. 👍

@tlcocks I have not knew anyone with more knowledge about equalizers. As u know I have the MQ112 I really wish that u could demo it sometime and tell him what you think of it compared to the other 3 that you love. I also really think u owe it yourself to demo the MQ112. There is also a great utube video of it from where I purchased it from Ski Fi audio in Glen Rock NJ. If u haven’t already watched it I encourage you to see it. I really would love to hear your professional opinion on it.

@ltmandella   I felt the same way as all the other pursuits, because I only wanted to hear the very best sound that my equipment were producing. And I thought that any other source adding to it would degrade the performance of my gear. JMO.

@au_lait   The CP is also a preamp? Sounds really good but what if u have no use to use it as also a preamp. Is it still worth the very high used price ?

@tlcocks   My bad. I did remember reading about your system on P 3 👍. Also I too love Peter Gabriel. Funny u mentioned it. I just bought his 2 cd hits and also saw this new I/O cd with 2 different mixes on 2 CDs. Bright side and dark side mix.

@tlcocks Do u ever plan to demo the McIntosh MQ112 ? I would really love to hear your opinion on it. For now at least check out the video on u tube done by Fernando at Sky Fi audio. That’s also the place I went to hear it and buy it.

@tlcocks Yep. I really enjoyed the video. And also the guy from McIntosh was in it with him. An hour about.

@tlcocks   Wow That’s strange. I guess I was lucky to have acquired one. And he only had one in stock and his demo. And there was someone coming in the following day to demo the MQ112. Most likely he would have bought it. He also said that he would be getting more in stock in Jan if mine was sold.

@tlcocks  Question. As u know I have the MQ112. What I don’t understand is when u all talk about DSP what is that. Also analog and digital equalizer. What is the difference. And what is the MQ112 ? Digital, analog ,DSP ?

@tlcocks Ty. Could u please explain what each one would be used for ? That’s the only thing I’m not understanding. And so even if my listening is only digital meaning cdp and I have an analog equalizer is that ok ?

@tlcocks  Audio Research Ref 750s mono amp. Audio Research Ref 6SE pre amp. Audio Research Ref 9 cdp. All Straight wire Crescendo XLR cables.

@mapman Thank you for showing me that. I do remember reading that in priors.
@tlcocks Thank you for breaking that down for me. And yes that’s another reason why I also went for the McIntosh Q112 over the Schitt Max even though I did love the remote  , because the 112 really is a beautiful piece of gear and looks great with my high end gear  Much more than Schitt Max

@tlcocks Question. All the Equalizers you are mentioning and now the DW Fearn VT 5 all sound very good from what u are describing. BUT aren’t they wouldn’t they be more appropriate- useful in a mastering studio professional use more then for at home audio ? As also they look very industrial more for studios than for home.

@dgarretson  If u go on utube and search for McIntosh MQ112 Ski Fi audio. They have a video about 50 min of the MQ112. At the end of it they show u the inside. Also I do not see your system in your profile ?

@dgarretson Dont understand what u mean. >McIntosh : But where the money went into this design is clear.

@mirolab Understood. Let talk about aesthetics. The Loki Max TO ME looks extremely cheap and small, not blending in well with my system. The Massive Passive is I’m sure a phenomenal piece of equipment but way to big and way to industrial looking for my taste. If I had a recording studio and doing mixes etc I’d definitely buy one. And I agree that what u said “ The MQ112 looks perfect in my system   And sound beautiful. That is all that I needed. IMO.

@hilde45   Hello. I DM you a few times. Didn’t get no response. I’d like to try that older until out that u don’t use anymore. Looking forward to hearing back from u.

@tlcocks  so u are talking up to 4k. Compared to 1500   Big difference. And a remote is a big deal to me rather than getting up and down for every songs.

@ellajeanelle I have the Mclntosh MQ112 equalizer. Just came out a few months ago an I totally love it and recommend it. Absolutely no hiss at all on any frequencies.
