Dynaudio Emit 10 vs. Evoke 10

Just wanted to bump this, I recently purchased the Emit 20 and am amazed at how much detail there is along with solid bass that goes much lower than the specs suggest. Piano sounds extremely accurate. From what I’ve read, these are using the Evoke tweeter, similar woofer, but no veneer, made in China and a different crossover. 
 

I also have been curious what you get with the Evoke, but the amount of open box listings I see for those makes me think this is a bare bones Evoke and not worth the trouble going up double the price.

Next year will be Dynaudio’s 45th anniversary… Special 45? That would probably be the next model I would look at from them.

I’ve read the Evoke 20 is a step up from the Emit with a smoother response. Some reviewers have made this there go to bookshelf speakers. I have the first generation Emit 10 which I like because of the exposed driver fasteners vs. the later version w/ a trim piece covering them. It fills a small room w/ ease using SS and tube amps, but had trouble filling a large 18’x22’ space with a big sound. Your Emit 20 probably fills a large room does this better than my 10s.

Presuming the OP made a choice by now, but others may be curious.

Original Emit M10 versus Evoke 10. Main difference to me is the bass, Evoke has more and slightly deeper. Havent heard the Emit 10 (the Emit M 10’s replacement), but it is reputed to be more similar to the Evoke 10 than the Emit M 10 was.

The Evoke line falls into what is sometimes called the "lifestyle" category of speakers- for example the old B&W CM line.

Lifestyle lines look pretty smart and usually do nothing to offend sonically.

Back to differences- the Evoke image slightly better, but neither speaker is an imaging champ. What I like most about these dynas is tone- instruments usually sound close enough to right- not thin, not metallic (particulary acoustic instruments- Piano, Saxophone, Cello) . That is the hardest thing to do at the lower price points and think Dyna does a good job there.

Overall the Evoke 10 is somewhat more reserved and measured. What some people refer to as "polite". In fact some might find the Evoke 10 too much so. Another thing, the Evoke 10 are not as easy to drive.

Verdict: overall I actually prefer the midrange of the Emit M10. Which I think is the Emit M 10’s strongest point.

Treble on Evoke 10 is more refined and slightly more open. Bass is stronger on Evoke 10, but find nothing lacking about the bass of either. Neither is super strong in the timing and coherence department- I’ve heard better there (found the older Rega RS3 to be very good there).

IMO the main thing you get with these lower Dynaudio models is very good instrumental timbre and natural detail for the price. They can be beaten on imaging- It’ll depend what your own preferences are.

What Hi-fi’s "Verdict" section on the Emit 30 encapsulates the overall presentation of these newer budget Dynaudio models...and is likely accurate. And that’s to say they might not be the most exciting speakers out there but do plenty of things right. For what it’s worth I felt like the Emit M10 was a pretty good deal price wise- made me say "these are pretty darn good for the price". Whereas I didnt get the same wow factor with the Evoke in the value category.

There are things I like about both speakers. My instinct is that the Evoke 10 would be better served by feeding them more current.

Lastly the original Emit line and the earlier runs of the Evoke line say "made in Denmark" and now say China. ..so one of the last hold outs of the major brands has also gone to China (just like KEF and B&W).

I have a set of Emit 20 speakers out in my garage. I have an Arcam A49 200 WPC amp running them out there they are a decent speaker for $1000.00 good enough for the garage.If you have some money buy a set of Special40's greta speaker. but current heavy, need an amp with some grunt

Thanks Fillmoor, for you personal experiences. I’m still using my M10 and find they work exceptionally well in my 9’ x 12’ small spare room using a 40W tube amp or a 60W SS amp. When I had them in our 18’ x 22’ large living/dining area they didn’t have the capability to fill the room. So I’ve been using them with superb results in a small room. I'am still considering an upgrade but am satisfied for now.
