DMS 600 Owner review

DMS 600 Owner review

Media streams have become an integral part of most of us audio systems. Today most of the music is no longer consumed on physical media but by streaming (local or external jobs).

Beyond the convenience of streaming, the elimination of the need for physical media and the endless and accessible catalog are benefits for most people.

Those benefits were good enough for me that a few years ago I jumped to streaming solution myself and all ought I keep a broad catalog of physical media like disks and records 99% of the time I find myself using Tidal's streaming service.

Back to 2019, for about a week and a half I have been playing at home with Cary Audio DMS 600 streamer/DAC that, it replaced the DMS 500 that has accompanied me for more than two years.

Anyone who would like to read about the DMS 500 can find some reviews on the net, its fine and recommended streamer for anyone looking for device that knows how to do everything in a good to very good way.

During Munich 2019, Cary Audio announced 2 replacements for the DMS 500, the first DMS 550 that took everything that was good in the 500 and added some more - Upgraded DAC (AK4493EQ), more flexible setup options, additional streaming services, headphone amplifier and a few other small changes that caused a small increase in the outgoing generation price.

DMS 600 What's new.

Surprisingly or not, the people of Cary Audio decided to bring out a new flagship this season for the DMS 600.

The major changes between the DMS 500 and the new DMS 600

A. changes in the external body, it's now more massive than the previous model, the whole device stands

on spikes that sit on discs (to prevent resonance).

B. Separate internal cells (carrier, DAC, network cards)

C. Wider antennas allow improved reception of WiFi & Blue tooth signals

D. Upgraded DAC AKM4497EQ VERITA that delivers natural sound and clarity

E. AptX ™ technology has been upgraded to aptX ™ HD so that HD content can be streamed in Bluetooth as well

F. Enhanced dynamic range (130db) and signal to noise ratio (115db)

G. Support for additional streaming services

The above changes + the success of the previous generation + positioning have resulted in a steeper price increase for the DMS 600 than it's "little brother" the DMS 550.

Differences:

At first glance, anyone, who is unfamiliar with the previous device (DMS 500) will find it difficult to identify differences as the two resemble each other with some outer design change.

Since I know the previous model. I immediately recognized the external body changes the device has undergone, including a solid front panel connection to the rest of the body (in the outgoing model and DMS550 which uses the previous model body the front panel stands out of the device). Also, new "legs" one that comes with spikes mounted on the base so that the device sits higher than the outgoing model and suppose to eliminate resonance.

The back connections (with the exception of wider antennas) remained the same (i.e. XLR, RCA ports) digital and optical ports, network inputs, and USB connections that allow HD connection to the device directly (additional input is on the front along with HD input)

The device's settings menu has been expanded to allow for more options, the most important to me is the option to change a remote code - one of the things I complained to Cary Audio as soon as I got the previous model that clashed with my Marantz's AV7703.

With the exception of changes to Cary Audio software settings, it feels the software remain the same (IOS, Android), but now works faster and more stable than before (since I use Roon beyond the Cary app device setting, I stay orphaned).

As in the previous generation and as in the DMS 550, here too, you can up sample and convert any file format in the real-time domain to DSD (you can convert up to DSD 512, depending on file and connection)

Sound:

The DMS 500 was characterized by warm sound with a certain roll off in the high tones which result "tube" sound.

Thanks to the new DAC, the DMS 600 releases clear, natural and homogeneous sounds that go beyond the previous generation, the difference was felt to me as soon as the device was connected and continues to taper as the device first 100 hours runs nearing completion.

All the good that was in the sound of the DMS 500 is here with a small audible change – no more roll off in the high notes. The sound more detailed and more natural (less on the hot side than before but still retains Cary's sound tuning DNA).

I found that I get performance better than I knew on my previous device, one that could satisfy me above and beyond, or at least until it found spar budget for top of the line MSB or lampizator.

Honestly, after checking in the system DACS that cost some 18,000 usd, the differences between DACs of a certain price level are not as abysmal as they used to be (I have heard a number of DACs in the system, some are expensive and found no significant differences if at all as the price indicates).

The current upgrade allows my setup to show better ability than before (it's not about drama, the sound is more clear and neutral than before). There is a leap in performance and better results than before – evolution not revolution.

Summary:

Anyone looking for a Streamer/DAC device that knows how to do everything – play and convert files in real-time while able to connect to almost anything, stop here - the DMS 600 is a "Swiss army knife" machine that knows how to do everything and knows how to do it very well - it is also recommended to compare devices that cost much more.

My feeling, if you take the DMS 600 to test drive you'll be hard to return it to your dealer.

Rest of my System:

Speakers: Magico S3 MK2

Amplification: Luxman c900u and m900u

Analog Source: Brinkmann Audio Bardo Turntable

Phono: Zesto PS

Speake and Power Cables: Cardas Clear

Excellent, well written,  review of the DMS600. Thank You.

Happy Listening!

Thank You for the comparison of 306 SACD PRO and the DMS600.

I have always wanted the 306 player. Sadly, I do not believe that CARY supports this spinner via critical parts/repair.

Happy Listening!

Hear ya on the spikes. Takes a little effort. 2 people jobI also had an A10 ,can’t remember having that feature. landscape feature would be nice.
Are you using with a Pre-amp? I think the Cary sounds so good it does great as a stand-alone. I have had a few pre amps in the chain and did not improve. I am using a wired connect with an EtherRegen w/a Sotm dcbL cat 7 cabl and took it to another level.  Try using the SD card with some hi Rez tunes. Please reach out if you need some files. The Conductor app blows away the Cary’s native app but it is Roon Ready if you want to go that way   There is a free 60 day trial that comes with the Cary.
In my system with Persona 5F speakers the Cary is a great match. Detailed but not etchy. Never gets tiring to listen to.
Think I will try a SR orange as I have had pretty good luck in the past with their fuses. Good luck with your player!!
Hi all,
After a week having dms-600, and playing music 1 to 2 hr a night, I only do streaming. This dms 600 is fantastic machine, sound is very clear, details, and open, turn volume up to 10 %, I can hear all the details. I have used Aurender a10 before dms, dms sound and quality way better than a10.
Few thing CA need to improve,
1. The spikes are useless, take forever to set up those spikes, with 28lbs machine take down and put up, will break your back, end up I use Nordost sort kones.
2. On app, when song is playing and you want to skip to next song, volume should turn down to 0, before go to next song, then turn back on where user setted. Aurender has this feature, very neat.
3. App screen should able to rotate, most the time I hold iPad on landscape (horizontal) way.

I wasn't  trying to denigrate the DSM600 it looks like a wonderful streamer / dac that could compete with higher priced ones. I was thinking it was new this year if it came out earlier last year then I can see why they used that chip.
djones51  if you check around you'll see other companies using DAC chips that are older - MBL, Luxman and others
the cost of the DAC chip is a fraction of the product. any firm will try to lower the cost if there is no significant difference.

any way the 4499EQ came out in January 2019, at that time it was costlier as well as i guess Cary Audio all ready designed the DMS600 before new chip release.
Obviously there is more to it but you mentioned this being a new product and the upgraded chip. I was just pondering why they went with the older chip when even a $700 Topping D90 has the 4499EQ with 4 channels compared to the older 4497 with 2. I said it looked like a good product and competitive in it's  price range.
I imagine it's a wonderful player but the AKM 4499EQ with 4 channels is their newest chip. There are some dacs out that use it. I wonder why Cary chose the 4497? Oh well I doubt anyone  could hear a difference  between  them anyway.  For the price looks like another great option.
I just bite the bullet, and order DMS 600 with no return. Hope its good.
Thanks for the feed backs.
Installed an UpTone Etherregen in front of the DMS 600.  This player sounds incredible.  Still using without a pre. Really no need. It sounds that good. 3 volt output vs the usual 2.2 or so for most source components.
If this player ever gets a professional review it will blow up.
Highly recommended!!
@fiza

since i didnt compare DCS or MBL on the same setup. I cannot say any more than: those two are good products (in the setups i heard them)

comparing setup to setup i still prefer mine
Crazy as last night I was watching a movie on HBO  thru the Cary’s optical. For 2 channel you would swear you where listening to a surround system. Rock sold center image, fantastic bass and front channels with enveloping sound.

Keep in mind its not just the AKM chip that create the end result, its the entire box, there for two components with the same DAC chip can sound different.
I recently got the Cary DMS-600 to replace my old warhorse, the Cary 306 SACD Pro.  No contest, even with the Aurender N10 feeding the 306 and a Mac Mini feeding the DMS-600.  I didn't make a direct comparison since I had sold the N10 before getting the DMS-600.  No matter.  It is one of those instances where 5 seconds in you can hear the clear distinction between the two.  As noted above the AKM 4497 chip delivers slightly warm yet detailed sound that is within the traditional Cary house sound for its digital products.  This is no doubt a winner for Cary, one that is very under-reported.
Sorry, my mistake. The TEAC NT-505 costs about 1/3 not "less than" but "of the" the Cary DMS 600.
Interesting to note that the new Reference Series TEAC NT-505 Dual monaural USB DAC/Network Player also employs the latest VERITA AK4497 DAC chips used in its dual monaural circuit. It also supports DSD512 and PCM32/768.
I have noted that TEAC NT-505 costs about 1/3 less than the Cary DMS 600.
I never heard them both and wondered if anyone did and can share their impressions.
>> So if a speaker measures flat it automatically sounds good?

Don’t know, what is good for you can be bright and not so good for others.
Yes no denying the Personas have a bump in the upper registers but can all be taken care of with careful system matching.
So if a speaker measures flat it automatically sounds good?

‘Please let’s not turn this into a Persona thread. There are plenty of those.
The Cary is a terrific player.  Gets better everyday.
That is all BS.   When I first got the Personas I had Audience Au 24sx cabling. Damn near world class but not a good match for the Personas. Switched to Cerious Cabling and still all the good with the Personas but got rid of the etch.
Tried the Lumin T2. Sounded great 7 out of 10 songs but the Sabre Dacs lean on the brighter side so again not a great match for the Personas
The Cary with the AKM 4497 which are a warmer sounding chip to begin with sound fantastic with Personas. All the beautiful mids with no fatigue. A perfect match !!
All systems are about synergy. Plug and play isn’t going to happen. Dealers don’t have the time to experiment with cabling with all their different systems.  Personas with the proper cabling and Front end sound as good as any else and better than most in their price range
The Magico’s where a very clinical speaker. The A3 couldn’t hold a candle to the S1 so not sure what model of Persona mheinze  was listening too.I am assuming the 3f.
I think the S3 mkII are a much better speaker than the S3.  They where just a lot more money than the Personas so I never really considered them.
I listen extensively to the Persona before I bought the Magico A3 (and the deal on the Persona was much better). The Persona were  bright and after the initial wow, quite fatiguing ( also a bit of a grainy highs). Some people like that, you should go and listen for yourself.
Room is 16x14 with the system on the long wall.   That will change as I am breaking ground on a 29x18  listening room
Persona 5f’s replaced Magico S3. Odyssey Kismet Monoblocks , Cerious Technologies Graphene Matrix cabling.  The Cary has been in the system little over a week   Kills anything else I have had in the system and that’s as a stand-alone. The Lumin T2 and  Aurender A10 had the benefit of a Micro Zotl 2.0s tube pre amp and the Cary stills kills them
can you edit your title to to read Cary DMS 600?
The Cary is just settling in. My room is my limiting factor which is about to change.
Its really unbelievable what this machine does. As far as connectivity and decoding all formats and resolutions.
Specs say 23.5 lbs but the 600 with the upgraded casework weighs in at 28 lbs. friggin beast.

Thank you for sharing your experience and thought.
indeed the DMS 600 if a fine product and deserve to be recognized as one of the best DAC/Streamer for its price level.
Just replaced my Aurender A10 with the DMS 600
not sure why this player does not get more chatter. The full list price is 6999 but with tier pricing and their sales you can purchase for much, much less
My whole goal was to be able to get rid of my pre amp( Linear Tube MZ2.0 ) as I only had the one source and the extra box and cabling added up. The other streamer/Dacs I had in my system always lacked while using their digital volume control. The Cary does a great job on its own. No need for the pre.
I also had the Lumin T2 and Gold Note DS 10, in for audition and the Cary was the pure winner for my system.
The AKM 4497 dac used by the Cary is on the warmer side and matches up real well with my Persona 5fs.
I like the idea of playing Hi-Rez files from an SD card. Sounds incredible
Real nice app for the IPad and the IPhone app is outstanding as well. The remote control can also run the whole show which kinda cool when the iPad gets low on power
The color display is readable from 8 ft and includes album art along with sampling , etc.
customer service has been awesome and quick to respond to emails
Very happy with the purchase!!
