The worst - by far - is idler drive, followed from DD and best is Thread Drive (when done right).
But there is a Fangroup for everything :-)
But there is a Fangroup for everything :-)
I am always fascinated from technical solutions and an idler drive is THE best (by far) way to transform any vibration and smearing from motor to the bearing and platter. These distortions are called Rhythm (well, the" Subway below Kingsway Hall" in every record), the loss of High frequency information is a result in better Bass (like a compressed MP3 file to the midrange). Most record stations replaced those units as fast as possible. Personally I think, the audiophile world waited for them. Here is a version with an updated motor. PRAT counts |
Here's an interesting test for those of you who Right, but this is based on VPI's ultra low quality. But you find that very often with the stuff from other Manufacturers, too. Ever checked a Raven belt? The word "Precision" you find mainly in their advertising ads. Try that with a Basis belt :-) Or try a Timeline, it is a disaster for the majority of Manufacturers, they aren't able to offer a proper motor, even when you can buy 3 of them. Based on that inferior Design solutions I agree that a direct Drive can give better results. But this is not based on its Design, it is based on the low quality from the others even when they are very expensive. The majority of owners believe that the offered product (whatever it is, Tonearm, Cartridge, Speaker...) is simply perfect form the Design, the Manufacturers and his cohorts are directly sent from God to bring joy to everyone and it can be made better, maybe only with more money, but they don't even think about the correctness of the Design itself. Or what they really get for the money. Most learn by spending money, but even that does not educate generally. |
I am wondering that every Turntable discussion is based on speed only. Like Dev wrote, it is the beginning and it is important. But is that all? A little more knowledge should be available I think, we have the year 2013 now and serious High End has 5 digits or more and a lot of owners want to spend that money - Quality and Influence from the Bearing - Quality and Influence from the Chassis - Quality and Influence from the Belt - Quality and Influence from the Platter - Influence from Suspension and how it was solved - Why are some platters so heavy - Direct Drive works with continuous correction, what is the sonic result - Platter weight from DD and their sonic attributes - Weight in general and why - Is a polished frame good for sonics - Idler Drive has direct contact to Platter and Spindle - Advantages / Disadvantages - Speed correction or not - What material is used and is it stable over the years - suspension for Idlers, necessary or not - sonic results from contact motor to platter - isolation from internal vibrations in general - is reliability important or not - do Fangroups replace knowledge - are facts welcome or do they disturb dreaming - why are no turntable manufacturers found in such discussions - is analog the last resort for "I-do-what-I-want-and-who-cares-Design" - what is a stable Design - why can a unit change Performance when your wife opens the window - what is sonic feedback and so on and on |
A close friend who lives in Germany has a Platine Verdier which beats nearly everything which is out there. But it is an original one with the original magnets from Mr. Verdier. The next models were DIY units with various magnets and variable results. They can't be compared, the name Verdier is also used for inferior copies. Mr. Verdier published from time to time some hints on his website to "His Pirates" knowing very well that they will never get it....always funny to read. The original Verdier is a work of a Genius who solved a lot of Problems modern units still show. |
