Deep scratches on vinyl-bad for stylus?

I have a few records with deep scratches( the ones you can feel with your finger ) that play through without skipping. Do you think I can damage the stylus or cause its excessive wear? To anticipate the obvious advice-better copies are impossible to find, at least I haven't so far. Does it depend on the particular stylus design and other variables?

I don't think that there's any definitive study or proof, but I have a great deal of difficulty believing that playing vinyl with deep scratches and similar damage is not going to affect stylus and/or cartridge life.

Think about it for a minute. While we all probably do it from time to time, it's not going to be good for the stylus/suspension if done on a regular basis.
