Darwin Enlightenment XLR Cables – Impressions

I perused the audio/video forums searching for a review of the Darwin Enlightenment XLRs and didn’t see any, so I’m starting a new thread here.

How It Started:
I had the itch to upgrade my system and asked ChatGPT whether replacing my SMSL SU-10 DAC with the new Topping X30 would be a smart investment. The advice surprised me: skip the DAC for now and invest in better analog interconnects. After comparing several high-end XLR options (some much pricier), Darwin’s Enlightenment XLR stood out for its minimalist design providing direct, uncompromised signal path, using pure silver conductors and low-mass dielectric, with a reputation for transparency. That was enough to convince me to proceed with the purchase of these cables. The first pair was so good that I ended up purchasing a second pair.

First Listen:
Right out of the box, the Darwins were different. More open, more “alive,” with details surfacing in familiar tracks. Bass was tight, imaging spread wide, and even quiet nuances came through. There was no obvious coloration—just clarity and presence.

Burn-In Journey:
I logged my sessions carefully:

  • 0–30 hours: Impressive but raw. Some edge up top.

  • 50–70 hours: Smoothed highs, fuller mids; Norah Jones’s Don’t Know Why and Sarah McLachlan’s Angel sounded lush and lifelike.

  • 100–150 hours: Stage opened up; Hotel California (Live) by Eagles and Private Investigations by Dire Straits revealed deeper layering.

  • 150–200+ hours: Settled and refined; Chariots of Fire by Vangelis floated with ease, Don’t Give Up by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush showcased rich vocal contrast, Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel was dynamic yet fatigue-free.

Why They Work:
The Enlightenment XLRs don’t push a “sound.” They disappear, letting the gear shine. Across pop, acoustic, electronic, and live recordings, the cables stayed neutral but engaging. Highs were clear yet smooth, mids natural, bass articulate and fast.

Bottom Line:
After 200+ hours, these cables transformed my system more than I expected. They scaled with every component, revealed subtleties I’d never heard, and rewarded patience. If you want neutrality and detail without gimmicks, the Darwins deserve serious attention.

If you also own these cables, I’d really like to hear your thoughts. What did you notice in terms of sound quality, changes over time, or synergy in your system?
