Critical listening and altered states
Ok, this is not a question about relaxing, but about listening to evaluate how the system (or a piece of gear is sounding).
What, in your experience, are the pluses and minuses of altering your state of mind for listening? This can include anything you've used to affect your everyday state of mind, from coffee, beer, scotch, tobacco, to much stronger — and psychoactive, dissociative — additives.
What do you gain by altering your consciousness in terms of what you notice, attend to, linger on, etc?
What causes more details to emerge?
What allows you to stick with a thread or, alternately, make new connections?
Or perhaps you like to keep all those things *out* of your listening; if that's you, please say a bit about why.

Agreed....a really Fine cup of coffee... ....with some 'augmentation'...(no sugar or cream, pleeze...Black, like m'attitude....)...*g* ...to chase 'this'....if in the mode to just Enjoy. If I'm opt to be 'critical' about it....even the coffee + the sugar can be considered 'drugs' in their way. Where one 'draws lines' is where one draws them. |

....I don't support the use/abuse of drags, either....very disappointing.... Altered States, the movie...obviously K.R. must have dosed with a strychnine laced product, that 'some' enjoyed for the 'intensity' it evoked. Laughable then, absolutely ludicrous now....but then, I never enjoyed any hallucinations of that nature. Everything just looked like polyethylene to me after awhile....*shrug* |
@rockysantoro .....there was a parody of 'Tighten Up' called the 'Loosen Up' where the players began detuning instruments, the drums went random, and the organist just...well, it's good there wasn't a vid of it..... ;) |
....when the 'Gon posts 'go oblique' is where truth in audio tastes reside... ;) Personally, I apply both states at leisure* and compare notes. Anyway, thc, and it's current variations on the theme are most likely roundabout here...drinking only when the desire to short oneself to 'ground' seems to be a vaguely illogical Rx. Been known to 'mix my media' audially and chemotherapaticly....BUT 'ludes & Jack..... Lucy S. Diamonds eventually made everything seem to be made out of polyethylene, and rushing around had enough complexity going...post of that, yeah... Waiting for the echos in one's gray mush to settle...*L* Current interest re that is use for the Full STOP at the end of this physical endeavour....ego death prior to main event... ;) But........a late & fitting 'bro valentine carol to y'all Have a great weekend....J |

I listen, therefore I am. Not listening to other than rain on a metal roof.....a pleasant gray noise, versus the version not so long ago still very apparent debris being hid by the green springs... HO, as we've made our ways with the equip we have had, the senses sharp or dulled by practice made practical by the states we've been in. Impractical perception is generally more fun. ;) @hilde45 ....how about koans? I suck @ limericks.....😏🙄 |
Y'all are having way too much of funs... Letting the cat out of Schrödinger's and replaced with an intensely chocolate heart attack major slice of cake came to this knotty coil last night. Tempting, but not wanting to get into the 'having v. potential of consumption'.... Ah, Sound...immerse oneself into a pool of it....*S* ;) Not to all's tastes, no doubt...keeps the dust off the drivers.... |
@mahgister ...an image search, and it's yours. ;) Cover up that delicti corpus that age threatens all with....;) Somehow I've managed to pass on the pudge ...127 @ 5'7", down from 150's @ 5'11"...always preferred nimble over strength, although the latter has usually been enough.... The carriage rattles 'n prattles along....music keeps the witless knitted to varied degrees..... I like my bad habits....they seem to have kept yours unruly mostly heaped up. |
@puptent ....Thurston didn't hang with me....😏 When down to sticks 'n stems, the 'long beyond needing to be committed' hippie tykes get creative.... ;) Gets a bit 'raw', but....no pain no gain....db or otherwise.... Planning a run to the MAF in 8/'25 with my mutants....be there or blow it off. I will be obvious.... ...and not as obnoxious as you might think or fear.... ;) |
