Counterfeit Chinese Cables

I thought that I would write this for those who are curious about one of the many counterfeit Chinese interconnect cables that are available these days. I know that there have been threads about the subject before, and I was always curious because they seem to be such a bargain. I don't really recall much about what any members actually said about the performance of these counterfeit cables, and I didn't look back and do any research, but a couple of months ago there was a thread that came around to discussing the quality of Chinese made components, and oldhvymec said something that made sense to me.

He said that people that say that what they are making is junk should consider that much of what is in our gear, and a lot of our American brands are actually manufactured there. I decided shortly after that that I would take the chance on a set of interconnects, because I suspected that the interconnects going from my pre to my amp were the weak link and needed upgrading. The interconnects going from my DAC to my pre were Kimber Select which are very good, but the other set were LAT International (now defunct) which had cost $500.00 when new, but I had reason to believe they were lacking because I have one of their digital cables that turned out to be very poor sounding in comparison to others I own.

I decided on a one meter pair of counterfeit Nordost Odin interconnects for a total of $104.00 from Aliexpress. I received them a couple of weeks later. They appeared to be well made, and the locking fake WBT rca's were very impressive and are very tight.

First impressions after installing them were light, thin sound, lacking bass. Each couple of days brought improvements, but from the beginning I noticed that they were quieter. Now, weeks later, I can say that they are drastically better that the LAT's in every way. Detail and ambience are much better, but it's the focus and separation of instruments that is most noticeable.

I have no way of knowing if they are really a copy of the Nordost design, but I am impressed enough that I am going to try a counterfeit Nordost digital cable.

Obviously, this isn't a comparison that is useful to most, because there probably isn't anyone here using the LAT's, and everything is system dependent. I just wanted to relay my positive experience.

I don’t think anyone believes that the Chinese cables actually contain gold. But I got to tell ya the knock off Odin 4M balanced interconnects work very well with my sub-woofers.

They should probably include the name knock off in the description and labeling.

I have had the Nordost Odin 2 Chinese cables for a while now. Since I am using my reference Infigo cables full time I wondered where I could use the knock offs. They do sound pretty good especially for the price.

Since I have a 1 meter and a 3-meter XLR set’s, I thought I would try them on my JL F-113 subs. You know what? They make a very good, articulate, and powerful subwoofer cable. They have now replaced my previous favorite subwoofer cables.

Yeah, I can’t even make a claim with the CC company since a package was received. Albeit containing only half the order, luckily only out about $20.

I just received the AC plugs. So, the only problem has been being shorted the quantity of banana plugs.

Still very bad communications, I would not recommend anyone buying from the Furukawa Flagship Store via AliExpress.

ozzy

Well, my second chinese order was for some spades and AC plugs that I placed with the Furukawa Flagship Store went astray.

I ordered 2 items. One item was received but contained only half of the item. The other item never arrived. (Been over a month now). Very poor communications. I guess I am SOL and I’ll just have to accept the fact that I got stiffed, glad it wasn’t too expensive.

So, others be careful don’t buy anything from this supplier.

I'm sure of that. I just wonder how much of the wire/stranding method is also copied?

ozzy

The ones I received have serial numbers on them and also state made in the USA.  Very strange. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to verify the serial number with Nordost.

Just received the second (3M) pair from China from the Timeless audio store.

First listen, they sound like they are already broken in! Not like the other set.

They are like the other set, very good looking and seem to have pretty good sound quality. Especially for the money.

ozzy

Even though I think these Chinese cables are very good, I will have just too many cables considering I just ordered some $$$ ones.

So, I will be selling the one-meter balanced pair of the Chinese Odin 2 on Audiogon in the near future.

So, stay tuned...

Good question.

The one-meter XLR that was just received was from HIFI-DIY store. The other one a 3 meter not received yet is from Timeless Audio Store.

I never thought about the possibility of them being different. But very well could be.

For the last 24 hours I ran a Purist and several other burn in downloads through my Lumin X1 with the Chinese Odin 2 outputting the signal.

Today, as I listen, they have really progressed. I gotta say they already sound better than most cables.

ozzy

I received one of the Chinese Odin 2 1-meter XLR interconnects today.

They look pretty good.

First listen... the soundstage shrunk quite a bit from what I am used to. The cable doesn’t sound bad, but I can tell it needs lots of break in before passing judgement.

Again, I suppose that if I didn’t already have some very high-performance cables these might not be too bad.

We'll see how/if they develop.

ozzy

Not yet! I think mine is coming on a slow boat from China...

BTW, If my math is correct, the Nordost Odin 2 in a 3-meter XLR would cost about $30,000, so I guess my $100 with shipping China version will be close...

ozzy

I guess if the cables were not labeled Nordost Odin 2 it would not have attracted so much attention.

Again, I don't expect it to be much, but I hope I am surprised. For the total price including shipping it is worth a trial.

ozzy

I can only speak for myself.

I know I could never afford the real thing even used. I don't expect much but you never know.

ozzy

I'm sorry guys I just couldn't resist. I just ordered a 3M pair of the "Odon 2" xlr interconnects.
