"Cleaning" Vinyl Makes It Worse Not Better!

I"m using a spray 'advanced vinyl record cleaning solution' with a cleaning cloth.

It creates GUNK in the grooves which can be fixed by cleaning the needle 5-7 times during playing one side..  It gets into the grooves and fixes the problem.  I'd rather find a better way to clean the discs. Sounds dumb, I know.

What am I doing wrong?

Please Help!!

Hi dogberry, l do take your point for the usefulness of shaving products on the ‘platter’ but the thread was about cleaning vinyl originally. However a healthy clean platter will aid clean vinyl.

mmm, has now got me to thinking on the same lines for my decks…..Thanks for the heads up, l will try an electric toothbrush for cleaning my styli.

No offence intended, just some light tracking banter!

I use an old Nitty Gritty with VPI cleaning solution.   I keep the lips clean.....the result is clean records.   Very happy

When you get to a certain level of turntable, you’re not going to get a lid that attaches to the turntable. Lids induce vibration. I couldn’t imagine playing a record WITH the lid on. I once had THE best turntable in the world: The Versa Dynamics 2.0 (the cham-peen for around 10 years). NO lid whatsoever. Same with my Goldmund Studio/T3F.

This I KNOW: You will not find "lids" on VPIs, TW Acustic, AMGs or any of the better records players for that exact reason. And I’m certain that, if you’ve been to any Hi End shows, that you’ve never seen a lid on a turntable, especially while they’re playing records. Why? Because the more experienced people know it is not great for the sound. For storage, maybe. But none of those have hinges.

What kind of turntable do you have, by the way?
