Classical Music for Aficionados

I would like to start a thread, similar to Orpheus’ jazz site, for lovers of classical music.
I will list some of my favorite recordings, CDs as well as LP’s. While good sound is not a prime requisite, it will be a consideration.
Classical music lovers please feel free to add to my lists.
Discussion of musical and recording issues will be welcome.

I’ll start with a list of CDs.  Records to follow in a later post.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique.  Chesky  — Royal Phil. Orch.  Freccia, conductor.
Mahler:  Des Knaben Wunderhorn.  Vanguard Classics — Vienna Festival Orch. Prohaska, conductor.
Prokofiev:  Scythian Suite et. al.  DG  — Chicago Symphony  Abbado, conductor.
Brahms: Symphony #1.  Chesky — London Symph. Orch.  Horenstein, conductor.
Stravinsky: L’Histoire du Soldat. HDTT — Ars Nova.  Mandell, conductor.
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances. Analogue Productions. — Dallas Symph Orch. Johanos, cond.
Respighi: Roman Festivals et. al. Chesky — Royal Phil. Orch. Freccia, conductor.

All of the above happen to be great sounding recordings, but, as I said, sonics is not a prerequisite.

I may be a little late on this post but I have a small obsession with Rachmaninov’s symphonies and my favorite recording of his first is by Ashkenazy with the  Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. London. 1984. DDD411657-2
I know this is almost a year old but I recently discovered this sad news and did not see any mention here on Agon. One of my favorite conductors growing up.

Just about finished this set of dvd's
Great musicianship, and the camera work follows appropriate sections. Documentaries are in german with english subtitles. Beautiful venues with apparently good acoustics  as well. Especially liked Barenboim and Rattle concerts although didn't as much prior to seeing this box set.

Does anyone know why the MPR classical station on Chromecast has been playing Beethoven's greatest hits for a week now, over and over again.

I checked MPRs website playlist and they apparently do not parallel like they used to.

Enjoyed Salzburg Festival Opening Concert on blue ray box set

Daniel Barenboim, Piano, Bela Bartok, Piano Cocerto No1.
then as conductor Tchaikovsky Sym 6.

Thanks for the tip on Zanders Mahler Symphony.
Agree, very nice dsd and rendition.
I don't think there is mention of this recording in the late Penguin Guide?
