Thanks I am making a list to try. I do like Mose Allison, have a lot of his stuff.
Can you recommend Jazz for some one that doesn't like Jazz?
Let me explain, I have tried to like jazz for over 30 years. I rarely find something I like. To me it sounds too disjointed, like everyone is trying to out do the others and they are all playing a different song. I know there has to be some good instrumental smooth jazz artists I am missing. If you have any suggestions of whom to try let me know. Some that are on my Jazz playlist is Pat Metheny-"It's for you" Bill Frisell _"Heard it through the grapevine" Holly Cole, George Benson... for an example of things I do like.
I'd love to have a 100 song Jazz playlist. So what'ch got for me?
Thanks

This is great everyone and thank you for all the suggestions, I got some homework to do! I should have not described my wishes as smooth jazz, that isn't correct. Some I have already added to the Jazz playlist are Kenny Burell, Wes Montgomery, Ron Carter, Stanley Turrentine and Bob Brookmeyer. THANK YOU! |
As someone suggested I listened to "Jazz at the Pawnshop" on Qubuz by Aren Domnerus. I made it through!
There is an overwhelming about of infor mation on the thread, I can refer back ot it but this is a lot. Thanks to everyone. I've added about 15-20 songs to my Jazz playlist so far. What I do is use the qubuz web player keeping the window open and go through the suggestions on here from another window, then add those I like to the playlist after I listen. I use headphone fo that. All this takes time. |
@stuartk look up that recording if you have a streaming service and you will understand-it's a cover but with quite a twist. Definitely Jazz!

I DID take the suggestions and I grew my playlist. There are so many in this thread it has become overwhelming but over time I will try them out, I put something a my Jazz playlist while ago and got scolded because it isn’t Jazz. Hell I didn't know. I was just identifying things I like for guidance. Hell it was an improvisation on a popular rock song I thought was cool. You said
SO if I don’t like something I got no class I guess. This is what I mean by ruffled feathers. But I did benefit from this thread, I did find some things I like and that is what I was looking for so mission accomplished. I am not a true Jazz lover but I can still enjoy some of it but not be a card carrying member. |
To clear the air, I have not been trying to like Jazz for 30+ years, I am coming back to try and learn what I like because I have a great system and a lot more time. (I rebuilt my Audio System from my 15 years absence from it because life had other ideas.) I want to explore new music now. @howardlee You are absolutely correct, my head is spinning with all the suggestions it is absolutely overwhelming. I realized 2 days ago I have 75-100 Jazz CD’s on the bottom shelf of my collection. I collected Jazz when I was in my 30’s (I am 70 now) that I can play and research what floated my boat long ago. I have many from the suggestions on the 4 pages of this thread so far. It’s nice to hear others have the same question as I, I am not alone here. Jazz lovers sure a passionate group! Happy Holidays to all. |
