" I hat"d Grand Funk Railroad."
Big mistake! They were an awesome power trio! Cream got all the love from the critics. |
"I guess that if vacuous tawdry consumerism had a sound it would be like that"
Nice one Chasmal!
Like I said, perfect Super Bowl halftime fare! |
They are entertaining live.
I have one CD of theirs. I'm a Dick dale fan and I liked their take on "Miserlou". The low end on their discs will shake the rafters for sure based on what I have heard. There is something to be said for that from an audiophile perspective. Also I do like Fergie in general.
Let's hope the future of modern music has a bit more to offer though.
Super Bowl halftime show next year anyone? Fergie can have all teh wardrobe malfunctions she'd like from my perspective. |
"she's hot, she can dance, she sings good enough and she's hot"
that about covers it.

case closed. |
"Fergie apparently was a meth addict for a while and has had a total facial reconstruction to fix the damage from those years."
They did a nice job.
She looks to be in fit dancer shape as well these days! Congrats to her for turning things around apparently!
Mickeyf,
You are not THAT Mickey who has worked for Disney all these years are you?
Your assessment reminds me of my assessment of The Disney Channel, which is my 8 year old daughters favorite fare!
As a sidenote, she does happen to have a very keen ear for music for an 8 year old I must say! |
"Has anyone here who dismisses BEP decided 'against their better judgment' that someone else, also similarly dismissed, was actually worth listening to from time to time?"
Brittney Spears Christine Aguilera Elvis The Monkees AC/DC Chumbawomba BEP Three Non Blondes Queen Beyonce Little River Band Dr. Hook Three Dog Night Chicago |
"Rap has rhythm but ignores melody and harmony. "
A lot of highly regarded 20th century classical music has none of the above.
I think what one considers art versus pap is largely just a matter of perspective and hubris. Some art can just be fun and even a bit off color and not taken too seriously. |
Their recent song "I Gotta Feeling" (not The Beatles tune with similar name) is a pretty darn good piece of modern pop music. I think I read it is the most or second most downloaded song in Itunes history. |
not so "vacuous tawdry consumerism" at its best! |
I liked their halftime show. |
"Personally, I can't stand the entire super bowl circus."
Philosophically, I am in this camp as well. But it is what it is so I just go with it.
I'm not going to say the BEPs performance set any new musical standards.
But I actually like the songs they did and the performance with the spectacle and all was fun and somewhat fresh, so I actually enjoyed it more than any other recent SB halftime show I've seen, including some of my aging classic rock heroes like McCartney, The Stones, and The Who.
I will not compare BEP to them any more than I would compare them to Ellington, Armstrong, or even Beethoven.
They are all totally different beasts from totally different ages.
THE BEP are the least of my concerns as I get older. |
Reading my last post back did I mention the BEP in the same line even as those others?
Oh well, it is what it is.
The BEPs have racked up a lot of success of late. The book is still open. We'll see...... |
"Only if you measure success by tickets and/or records sold."
That's a good measure of success I would say.
I am usually able to find something to like about pop music acts that either were at one time or are currently popular, at least if the popularity persists over an extended period. Also influence on future acts is another measure of success in the long term, I suppose.
Spectacle plays a big part in pop music, more so as time goes on it seems. Acts like BEP and Lady Gaga (including their producers and directors) are trail blazers in this regard.
That's the part that just is what it is to me.
One thing about BEPs, their CDs apply a lot of over the top electronic bass that I find exhilirating and was a big challenge to get a handle on in building my audio system. So in that sense BEPs recordings have played a significant part in my quest to enable my system to deliver with modern digital pop music. I owe them something for that at least I suppose.
Plus I still think Fergie is hot!
|
"The best measure of success is longevity."
No doubt.
But can't apply that criteria to current acts quite yet without a crystal ball of some kind.
We'll see....
I used to think AC/DC sucked. I changed my mind years later. |
I was disappointed with CA's national anthem.
BEPs performance was about what I expected, at least when the mikes were working.
As one local reviewer pointed out, at least BEPs actually attempted to perform their stuff in that environment rather than lip synch. SO they should get some credit for that.
However, performances of teh national anthem should be held to the highest standards at a landmark symbolic event like the Super Bowl. No excuses for anything less than perfection there ever!!!! |
"close you could hear autotune being turned on while they were talking"
It's no secret that a lot of modern pop music uses this technology.
So what if the act is electronically enhanced? That's progress.
It beats lip-synching and pretending to sing completely which has been going on for decades. |
"Whitney lip synched, but it was still the best anthem performance of all time."
I'll accept lip synching for the anthem if needed to assure a sterling performance.
Otherwise, let people who are supposed to be singers just give it their usually best. No big deal.
Agreed Whitney's was perhaps the one for the ages. |
