When in time does "Modern Day" begin? Many of the best film scores are by Korngold, Rosza, Bernstein etc, but they may be out of your time frame.
Best Orchestral Film Scores
I enjoy orchestral works for film. Two good examples are Gladiator by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard and Empire of the Son by John Williams. John Williams seems to have a very impressive body of work.
