I owned a D5 for 4 years. On three different occasions I auditioned the SE version and came away unimpressed when compared to my D5 with Siemens or Amperex 7308s plugged in. To my ears, my D5 was livelier sounding. The SE sounded dark by comparison. The SE had tighter bass and perhaps a bit more detail, if I remember correctly. I do remember I had a strong preference for the standard D5 with top notch tubes.
BAT VK-D5 or VK-D5SE?? Help
I currently own the D5 and am curious about the D5SE. The D5 is running Amperex Bugle Boy 6DJ8, and I really love it. I don't have an opportunity to audition the SE version. I know Stereophile and TAS had opposite viewpoints. Can any of you tell me from your experiences if I would gain anything by going to the SE version? If so, what?
