BAT VK-3i tape loop question

So, I was wondering if I wanted to hook a headphone amp up to my rig, it looks like I will put it between the tape loop on my BAT VK-3i. However, (this is probably a stupid question) are the tape loop outputs always engaged, so when I change source the signal will be duplicated on the tape loop? I guess in the past, my equipment has always had a button that I pressed to enable the tape loop, and the BAT is lacking that, so I'm curious how this will work.
