Audio Research LS22 Experience

I recently picked up an LS22 with the "R" designation (for remote) from Audiogon. It looks untouched inside, including eight Sovet 6922 tubes .I intend to replace the PSU caps and tubes, install the 6dB reduction resistors then experiment with different varieties of the other components. It may or may not be the final  preamp for my system depending how well the modifications work.

Right now, I am impressed. My other preamp is an Audio Research SP-6B, fully refurbed by AR this year. The 6B replaced a Levinson 38s and was a major improvement in clarity and soundstage while providing a little bit of welcome warmth. I use a recapped Levinson no 27 power amp and Revel f208 speakers (full range). I am pleased with the sound but am ever yearning for better.

Everything is cleaner without losing the bass heft, especially the very clear articulation of male and female voices.

Does anyone know how I can obtain a (supposedly unique) replacement for the LS22? I've read that the AR R1 remote or equivalents will not work. There are lots of offerings online, but I am leery of buying anything unless third party experiences have confirmed utility.

And why doesn't the LS22 get much respect?

Thanks!

I assume you asked Audio Research? They keep a stockroom full of vintage subcomponents... and if not would probably be able to tell you the requirements.

It's unclear (to me) what you are trying to obtain. Are you looking for a different preamp or just the remote for the LS-22?

My apologies, I am looking for the remote. I have the LS22 preamp.

I have left a message with AR. They've been very responsive in the past. But I got my message in too late today. I won't hear until mid-week probably.

I'm also interested in what others have done and opinions on the LS22.
