Audio Physic Virgo I (or Virgo II): still considered a very good or great speaker?
Audiogon offers a large variety of USED speaker of varying ages and design. I am curious if speakers like the above are still considered viable in terms of audiophile sound quality. I ask because any purchase of so-called "vintage" speakers pose a risk in terms of performance and sound quality, especially against newer technology speakers
I have heard the Virgo I about 15 years ago and liked it very much, and every time a pair come up on AG or e-bay, I am tempted to buy them, even a VG pair especially considering the large body of positive reviews and testimonials. However, I always nixed the urge to buy them new because I thought the original retail price was overinflated which subsequently pushed the RESALE price up. I have seen decent pairs for pairs for sale for $1500-1800; however, my intuition tells me that they are worth no more than $1100 even in near mint condition.
I guess I am basically asking....is it really worth it to buy used speakers approx.15 years old, no matter how much they have been praised .,or pursue newer speakers and speaker technology

trelja, Thank you for the clarification. Did you ever audition or hear the Audio Physic Sitara 25. This is one of several speakers that AP upgraded for its anniversary year. Actually, a new model. I believe there was never an "original" Sitara There are few reviews on the model, but they were generally very positive about this model, I am curious how would they compare against the AP Tempo I Again, thank you to all members who responded to this thread S.J.. |
I Own Virgo 2 birdseye maple, 2 pairs of step se Madagascar, step cherry and sonics argento sp)?(. All Joachim Gerhard magic! they are all keepers! I also have alair of Merlin VSM-ME. Other speakers owned and loved: ProAc Resp2 &2s(preferred 2 over 2s), totem forest, spendor LS3/5a, naim SBL. YES, pick up a pair Virgo2 at the going rate, set them up correctly, use vintage Naim, EAR integrated amp, or Cary 805’s and experience a glorious musical presentation. |
This is a fun/informative thread. thanks for starting it @sunnyjim I have a pair of AP Sparks that I bought in 2003. Though they are a little light on the base, they mate well with my 12W Unison Simply Italy, in a 130 sq ft listening room. At one point I needed to replace one of the woofers and found a pair on ebay for much cheaper than the new distributors were charging. @trelja -I also owned the Tempo I. Agree it's a terrific speaker.
