Audio nonsense

In this wonderful world of audio that we journey through folks selling stuff have sometimes been inventive in what they claim. In your trip down this road what sticks out as the most ludicrous thing you’ve seen someone try to sell?

I can point to 2 things. When I first saw a Tice clock in a store I thought it was a gag. Next- Peter Belt.

Yes it is desirable to have an engineering  STANDARD...

Correct.  At least to start with.  Otherwise, all bets are off.  What happens from there will vary widely case by case.

I have never understood why having a flat frequency response for speakers is a desirable attribute when the human ear hears almost every frequency differently, as described in the Fletcher Munson curves.

Flat frequency response is desirable if one cares at all about how their system measures. It establishes a correct objective baseline to work from. One can tweak subjectively from there as desired. Fletcher Munson is an important thing to take into consideration there after you got things set right to start with. Some speakers will attempt to cover that for you. If it sounds good that way to you, great. Does not mean it is done correctly though.

Cows don’t moo louder just because we don’t hear them as well as some other critters.

Unfortunately, if you want to hear ultrasonic frequencies like a dog, you are totally out of luck. No amount of frequency boost is going to do the trick.

Rather than talk about nonsense, I’m just enjoying the fruits of my labor. Nonsense not needed.  Just the facts ma’am.

Personal attacks are not a substitute for objective data but it seems it typically comes to that when products have very little information available to back them up other than someone tried it and it sounded good. Once one says that there often seems to be little else so people start personal attacks when the challenges to the product come. At least that has been my observation. People take it personally when products are challenged and there is little else they can say in its defense because there just ain’t much info made available.  So the outcome is pretty much inevitable.

Some people are interested in experiments and others less so. Any purchase is an experiment of sorts until after you hear it at home (and spend time to set up properly if possible). But experiments are a thing of science and science is based on facts. That’s a fact. Nothing wrong with just playing around. It can be fun.  Also expensive in a place like this.

I believe one must come to the realization that there is a lot of nonsense out there here as most anywhere in order to be able to sort through things meaningfully. Extreme positions either way never work. Like saying I hate negativity period or that no tweaks work. Also have a sense of humor. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Just the facts ma’am. No need to beat up others either way. Of course some are here mainly to make a buck and are not inclined to ever let up. Am I way off base here?

People like to play with Marvelous Toys.

They go zip when they move and bop when they stop and whirr when they sit still. I’ll never know just what some are and I guess I never will.
