short sqacky sound?? Just off the top of my head, the sounds like the speakers might have been toasted.

I was combining a Musical fidelity electra 100 integrated, carve pre amp and proac tablette speakers for a small bedroom system. i heard what i can describe as short sqacky sound. now no out put. First Is the MF 100 an amp the can function without a pre amp, if not how can i test both pieces to see which one has the output problem. Thanks
